2 The Linear Function The word LINEAR means having to do with a straight line. Linear relationships are also called linear functions. What we have learned: Graph is a straight line. 3 The Linear Function Every straight line has two special characteristics: Y-Intercept – This is the point where the line touches the y-axis on the graph. It is called an intercept because it is where the line intercepts the y-axis. Slope – This is the steepness of the graph. To find the slope from a graph, you need to have the co-ordinates of two points on the line. You find the rise (vertical change) and then find the run (horizontal change). The slope is equal to the rise divided by the run.
