2 Structure of Language Support System in Gießen-Vogelsberg Staatliches Schulamt ( Local Education Administration) 1 inspector as adviser 1 Regional adviser - English as foreign language ( teacher – only 2 hours of instruction less for consulting ) Vogelsbergschule: 1 School adviser only for English-teaching elected by English-teachers 2 teachers responsible in the QUILL-project

3 The situation of English – teaching in Hesse English is the first foreign language in all schools primary school – 3rd form (8 years old) - 2 / 3 lessons/week secondary ( 5th – 10th form) in all types of school – 4 lessons/week higher secondary education (Gymnasiale Oberstufe - 10/11-12/13) – 3 lessons/week Full-time vocational school (Fachoberschule) – 3 lessons/week

4 Second Foreign language and other Second Foreign language is obligatory in Real- and Gesamtschulen und Gymnasien Start: 6th/7th form ( Gymnasium) – 7th form other 4 lessons /week Languages: French ; in Gymnasium also Latin, Spanish Third Foreign languages: Russian, classic Greek, Special: migrants have lessons in their mother tongue e.g. Turkish

5 Qualification of teachers (1) Studies in 2 subjects e.g. English/History at university – 4 /5 years – 1st state‘s exam 2 years of induction in schools (Referendariat) – 2nd state‘s exam inservice – training offers by LEA or Center of Teacher-Formation and Training ( AfL) Inservice-training: regional ( adviser) or central

6 Qualification of teachers (2) inservice-training today: main point: new curriculum and standards e.g. in English since PISA: competence-oriented teaching School-based inservice-training of IT – working with active-board (e.g. online-dictionary, learning-software)

7 Tests and/or assessment ( 1) National surveys and tests since 2009 by National Institute for Quality in Education (IQB) in 6th., 8th. and 10th.form in all 16 federal states (Laender) In Hesse final central exam in Haupt- and Realschulen and Gesamtschulen in 9th. and 10th. form and Abitur (12/13th. Form) Regional: comparative assessment in the project „Voneinander lernen“ (learning from each other) in LEA GI/VO

8 Tests and/or assessment (2) at school-level: teachers in parallel classes develop common written tests to compare the level of classes or learning groups

9 Contacts and special offers exchange of students: in the last time less (LEA) study travels at the end of school-time ( so called „Finaltravels“- Abschlussfahrten) exchange by internet ( fixed on teacher) often by Skype Vogelsbergschule:Evening-events of Foreign Languages (2 years) Special presentations for parents by classes
