INTERFERENCE SCENARIO Operator 2 places a cell with a sector operating on a (near) adjacent channel inside and aligned with sector of operator 1 When it rains inside sector 1, wanted signal may be faded so much that unacceptable interference occurs inside a small area Area defined by TS antenna “seeing” both interfering and serving CSs, and relative ranges being such that C/I is unacceptable Area predictable given knowledge of Operator 2’s CS position and antenna characteristics Area typically 1 - 3% of sector assuming one channel guard band

COORDINATION BY PLANNING Many potential customer sites will be in shadowed areas and therefore unserviceable Operator may provide “multiple illumination” to improve probability of coverage An interfering CS will probably be mounted on top of a building Therefore the interference area itself may be shadowed! Operator must have coverage planning tools to predict which customers are serviceable These can also predict where interference may be an issue Avoid interference by pointing TS at a different CS
