2 History Unit 13: How has life in Britain changed since 1948? Who were the Victorians? When did they live? The Victorian Era is the name given to the period in history when Queen Victoria was on the throne. She was Queen from 1837 to 1901. That’s more than 63 years, which is longer than any other British monarch so far. Victoria had 9 children, of which 4 would later become monarchs: Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII and George VI. As well as English, Queen Victoria could speak German, French, Italian and Latin.

What changes do you notice? Why do you think there were changes? Here are some reasons for change. Can you think of more? easier to travel from place to place more jobs in factories or mills more things made by machines, less handmade things new housing built around workplaces population increase- people are healthier and live longer

Do you know when it was built? Heavy goods, like coal and cotton were carried by canal barge in Victorian times. The Victorians built lots of canals to bring supplies to mills and factories. Is there a canal in our area?

Many large factories and mills were built. Lots of them are still around today. Are there any buildings like these in your area?

People could travel between towns much more quickly Coach and canal boat companies lost some of their customers The building of railways and tunnels had an effect on the landscape A wider range of goods could be traded between towns
