3. IDDAT ( Is the name given to a period in which a divorced woman or a widow cannot remarry )

4. IDDAT FOR A WOMAN WHOSE HUSBAND TAKES AN OATH (ELA) The maximum time limit for iddat in Ela is FOUR months. Only husband has the right to retain his wife during this period in the handsome manner. Narrated Anas: Allah's Apostle took an oath that he would not go to his wives for one month as his foot had been sprained. He stayed in an upper room when 'Umar went to him and said, "Have you divorced your wives?" He said, "No, but I have taken an oath that I would not go to them for one month." The Prophet stayed there for twenty-nine days, and then came down and went to his wives. (Book #43, Hadith #649, Sahih Bukhari)

5. IDDAT FOR A WOMAN WHO ASKS FOR DIVORCE (KHULA) Iddat is for ONE month since she is mentally prepared for a divorce

6. IDDAT FOR A DIVORCED WOMAN AFTER RUKHSATI She must wait THREE menstrual periods. She would stay in her husband’s house with all her rights during that period. Divorced women shall wait concerning themselves for three menstrual periods. Nor is it lawful for them to hide what Allah Hath created in their wombs, if they have faith in Allah and the Last Day. And their husbands have the better right to take them back in that period, if they wish for reconciliation. - 2:228

7. THERE IS NO IDDAT FOR A WOMAN DIVORCED BEFORE RUKHSATI "O You who believe! When you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them, it is not required of you to count the Iddat in respect of them (33:49)

8. IDDAT FOR OLD WOMEN Who have reached menopause or for those who do not menstruate on account of a disease, 'Iddat' shall be three calendar months instead of three monthly menstrual cycles:(65:4)

9. IDDAT FOR A GIRL BEFORE PUBERTY The iddat for the girl before puberty is three months (Book #62, Hadith #63 Sahih Bukhari)

10. IDDAT FOR A PREGNANT WOMEN Whether Divorced or a Widow, her Iddat terminates after she delivers.

11. IDDAT FOR A WIDOW If she is not pregnant then iddat is four months and ten days. (If any of you die and leave widows behind, they shall wait concerning themselves four months and ten days. When they have fulfilled their term, there is no blame on you if they dispose of themselves in a just and reasonable manner. ) - 2:234
