2 Public Law 108-176, Vision 100 signed December 12, 2003 Establishes Next Generation Air Transportation System Joint Planning and Development Office Series of responsibilities –Create and carry out the Plan –Coordinate goals, priorities, and research activities within Federal Government and across US aviation industry –Facilitate technology transfer from research to operational and private sector organizations –Review activities related to environment and safety Operate in conjunction with relevant programs in specified government agencies Consult with the public and ensure the participation of experts from a broad range of entities within the private sector

3 A Potential Crisis in Our Air Transportation System: Adjusting to Growth Demand for air services is on the rise and could triple over the next two decades More airports will become capacity constrained Security requirements must be addressed Environmental challenges will increase

5 Strategies Formation of 8 Integrated Product Teams Develop Airport Infrastructure to Meet Future Demand - FAA Establish an Effective Security System without Limiting Mobility or Civil Liberties - DHS Establish an Agile Air Traffic System - NASA Establish User-Specific Situational Awareness - DoD Establish a Comprehensive, Proactive Safety Management Approach - FAA Develop Environmental Protection that Allows Sustained Aviation Growth - FAA Develop a System-wide Capacity to Reduce Weather Impacts - DOC Harmonize Equipage and Operations Globally - FAA

6 Goals of the Airports IPT Bearing in mind future traffic growth Operate facilities in a safe and efficient manner taking into consideration required regulations Work with other IPTs to develop smart policy and regulations Address major policy issues (Land Use; Security) Accommodate the needs of the passengers and users of the airport Maximize the use of existing airport facilities and resources Modify/Design airport facilities with flexibility and growth in mind

7 Expected Impacts on Airports No immediate impact on how business is conducted New Airport Design Guidance document currently under consideration Development of interim measures in the next 3-5 years (Weather and Air Traffic)
