Data handling Thursday

2
Objectives for today Extending our knowledge of statistics – range, mode, median and the mean. mode rangeToday we are focusing on finding the mode and the range.

3
Learning objectives for today moderangeTo be able to explain what the words mode and range mean. findmode rangeTo be able to find the mode and the range of a set of data.

4
Recap on vocabulary Today we are going to learn what this word means?

5
Recap on vocabulary The mean is the average value

6
Finding the MEAN 10 20 15 We work this out by adding the numbers together and dividing that number by the total number of values in the data set.

7
Now try these! 3 5 7 = 412 10 16 = 5 10 15 10 20 = The mean may not be one of the values.

8
Recap on vocabulary What does the word mean? largest The difference between the smallest and the largest number. Is the most common.

9
Vocabulary explained The RANGE is the difference between the highest number and the lowest number in a set of data. It tells us how spread out the data is. The MODE is the most common number in a set of data. Both these are called STATISTICS.

10
Weights of newborn babies What is the range of weights? What is the modal weight? 9 pounds 10 pounds 8 pounds 6 pounds 8 pounds 4 pounds 8 pounds Questions

11
Shoe sizes What is the range of shoe sizes? What is the modal shoe size? Size 4 Size 13 Size 12 Size 5 Size 10 Size 5 Size 11 Size 6 9 sizes Size 5

Data handling Friday

13
Objectives for today Extending our knowledge of statistics – range, mode, median and the mean. median meanToday we are focusing on finding the median and the mean.

14
Recap on vocabulary What does the word mean?

15
Finding the MEAN 10 20 15 We work this out by adding the numbers together and dividing that number by the total number of values in the data set.

16
Try these! 11 2 6 10 6 3 24 6 0 8 3g 9g 8g 3g 2g 8g 7g If I change the 7 to 14. Will the mean be higher or lower?

17
Decimals Sometimes the mean will be a decimal 7cm 8cm 7 Kg 12Kg 15Kg 7ml 11ml 23ml 15ml

18
What is the ? 129, 129, 135, 137, 140 A set of numbers are ordered from the smallest to the largest. The number in the middle is the MEDIAN.

19
What is the median? 3,7,8,10,11,13,15 2,2,2,5,7,8,9, 8,3,4,2,5,9,3, 8,3,4,9,2,5,10

20
Now try these 20, 20, 26, 30 If there is an even number of values in the data set when ordered from smallest to largest, the median is halfway between the middle two.

21
Now try these 20, 30, 10,50, 40, 60 22, 44, 12, 36 50, 100, 10, 30, 70, 90

22
Remember! The numbers must be put into order before the median can be found!
