2LIST / Veille stratégique06/01/2004 Overwiew What? How? Who? Whom with?

3LIST / Veille stratégique06/01/2004 What Is the Objective? Using and developping grid technology Look at where and when grid tech is useful, associate industry No silver bullet: distributed computing enhances local computing capability, it is no substitute All levels of grid middleware are of interest, e.g. –Active networks -> QoS –Better performance, stability –Programming model Grid software is not isolated (Web Services)

4LIST / Veille stratégique06/01/2004 How to Fulfill it? Open Source, obviously, today Open Source is not easy, it requires much rigor in organization and technical issues Share from successful EU OS projects Reveal workforce (think of Apache) Infrastructure (European Sourceforge) would prove useful

5LIST / Veille stratégique06/01/2004 Who Is Going to Do It? Open Middleware Initiative(s ?) Promote the emergence of software actors Exploitation strategy should be mandatory in projects (either open source or not) Promote definition and use of software performance and validation criteria Benchmark with existing commercial and advanced grid software European-wide experimental infrastructure for these objectives

6LIST / Veille stratégique06/01/2004 Whom with? Unuseful to participate to standardization without technology Interoperability is not good per se There shoud be competition (there IS, anyway) Collaboration is good and fair if it relies upon balanced competition On this basis, promote international cooperation
