X 2 EASE & Lean Manufacturing EASE modules support Standardized Work and Standardize – (Seiketsu) of 5S

X 3 What is Standardized Work? Definition Standardized work (also referred to as standard work) defines the current best practice to complete the task using available people, equipment and materials. It includes Cycle times, production sequences, and the methods to use Operator procedures, work instructions, QC checks and safety issues. Material flows, optimal WIP and layout. Purpose To ensure that tasks that are performed repeatedly are done so optimally and consistently. Variations in the process will create quality problems requiring rework or scrap and decrease labor performance. Comments A work standard is not the same as standard work. A work standard created by a time study or by using pre determined time systems covers production sequence and time but is not necessarily a best practice. A time study of existing work is rarely a best practice, it is a benchmark of current work content. A best practice starts with a benchmark of the work. Method improvement is where further analysis is done on examining each motion evaluating its value added /non value added and whether it can be eliminated. This does not exclude a completely new method that achieves the same result Actual time is the time it took to perform the task for a given run. Labor performance is based on the variance between standard and actual time. Standard work is not fixed but subject to continuous improvement Standard works contribute your ISO 9000 compliance Standard works dont by themselves create optimal and repeatable labor performance. They enable the process, operators still need to be trained and supervised You cant do kaizen effectively without standard work, if everyone can follow their own methods what are you improving on?

X 4 Standardized Work within EASE EASEworks allows you to Create and document the work content Optimize the work through method improvements and Value Added Analysis Write, maintain, control and present work instructions Use best practices established Index and present related documents from QC, Safety, Materials and Layout

X 5 How do you standardize work? Step 1 You work out the Takt time based upon customer demand

X 6 How do you standardize work? Step 2 You work out the number of stations required and assign work to them

X 7 How do you standardize work? Step 3 You optimize your methods and do your value analysis

X 8 How do you standardize work? Step 4 You document the work instructions, and ensure timely availability to operators

X 9 How do you standardize work? Step 5 You document other supporting data; control plans, FMEA, Safety, TPM..and make sure they are all indexed together and accessible to the floor

X 10 How do you standardize work? Step 6 You ensure that this best practice is enforced and disseminated to other plants

X 11 Standardize Work Steps 1. Get customer driven Takt Time 2. Sequence the work 3. Optimize the work 4. Document the work 5. Create & Index supporting documents
