12
How safe do we really want to be? l The real risks for any artist are taken in PUSHING the work TO THE LIMITS of what is possible, in the attempt to increase the sum of what is possible to think. Books become good when they GO TO THE EDGE and RISK FALLING OVER IT -- when they ENDANGER the artist by reason of what he has, or has not, artistically DARED. Salman Rushdie
13

14
How safe do we really want to be? l The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, SAFETY-FIRST INSTEAD OF DUTY-FIRST, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life….. Theodore Roosevelt
15
How safe do we really want to be? l The high sentiments always win in the end, the leaders who offer BLOOD, TOIL, TEARS, and SWEAT ALWAYS GET MORE OUT OF THEIR FOLLOWERS THAN THOSE WHO OFFER SAFETY and a good time. When it comes to the pinch, human beings are heroic…. George Orwell
16
How safe do we really want to be? l A man who has nothing which he cares about more than he does about his PERSONAL SAFETY is a MISERABLE CREATURE who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the existing of better men than himself…. John Stuart Mill
17
How safe do we really want to be? l There is safety in reserve, BUT NO ATTRACTION. One cannot love a reserved person….. Jane Austen
18
How safe do we really want to be? l The danger of the past was that men became slaves. The danger of the future is that men may become robots. True enough, robots do not rebel. But given mans nature, robots cannot live and remain sane, the become Golems, they will destroy their world and themselves because they cannot stand any longer the BOREDOM of a meaningless life….. Erich Fromm
20
