7. They Say We Say DigiPOS Retail Core only pulls 15 Watts of Power –
the lowest-power POS system available on the market.
What they don't mention: 15 Watts DC could only be achieved at no CPU load and with no I/O (and possibly no HDD). A very light I/O load will pull about 25W and a typical I/O load would be closer to 30W.
Retail Core has the smallest POS form factor.
235mm x 210mm x 60mm (WxDxH) for the ‘Core’, with an estimate of an additional 80mm of height required for the ‘Core I/O extender’.
The truth: AnyPlace POS is smaller than Core! SurePOS 300 is 40% smaller than Core + Extender. And most customers will need the extender – Retail Core only provides 2 powered ports: 1 x 24V USB and 1 x 12V USB.
Retail Core is fanless,
dispersing heat through
external heat sync. The exclusion of a fan
results in higher system reliability.
A fan is required for a 220W power supply, which most customers will
need to drive I/O devices. 2) Fans are not a cause of higher failure rates. In fact, not having
a fan carries the potential of actually increasing maintenance requirements and decreasing
reliability over time, as heat is a key issue in all electronic devices, from laptops to cell phones
to TVs, as many different parts within electronic devices run more reliably when not subjected to
heat. The lack of a fan leads to higher system unit temperatures, and these higher temperatures
drive higher failure rates over time. A properly designed thermal system with a properly engineered fan solution will run cooler, and run in higher ambient operating temperatures than a fanless solution, and the fan will not be a driver of higher failure rates.

Retail Core uses a low cost, modular Power Supply, for easy swap out as and when required.
Tool free access to power supply for easy, fast service. An external power supply increases the solution cost and the points of failure.
Retail Core is a completely sealed unit with no
moving parts, leading to less dust inside the unit, higher reliability.
Dust does not reduce reliability. Heat does! Higher system unit temperature leads to a higher failure rate. At a typical I/O load that uses 30W of power, the internal temperature of a sealed box approaches 65C – hot enough to hard cook an egg in 6 hours!
Retail Core uses DDR2 memory, expandable
up to 1GB.
The truth: The chipset used by DigiPoS in Retail Core does not support DDR2 memory!
Retail Core has composite high density DVI-I with VGA and DVI out. A custom cable is required for dual independent display.
A consistent, standard dual VGA implementation is native on SurePOS 700, and available via an
adapter on SurePOS 300.
‘Extender’ provides all powered RS232 ports.
The powered RS232 ports are likely USB based with no DOS support.
