2 ป.โท สาขา Medical and Pharmaceutical Research ณ Free University of Brussels, Belgium
Faculty of medicine and pharmacy Department of Embryology and Genetics The research group on preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) The research group on spermatogonial stem cells and spermatogenesis Since the end of the Second World War, Brussels has been a main centre for international politics. Flemish-Brussels lawyer Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen. He wanted to establish a university independent from state and church, where academic freedom would be prevalent. It is also a strongly research-oriented institute, which has led to its top-200 position among universities worldwide. Population 10 million, Master in Biomedical Sciences – Cell and Gene Therapy (former Master Program in Medical and Pharmaceutical Research) The first PGDs in the early 90ies were for monogenic diseases such as cystic fibrosis and Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, using PCR technology to establish the diagnosis. Since a number of years now, the PGD team for monogenic diseases is led by M. De Rycke. In 1994, FISH technology at the single cell level was introduced by C. Staessen for gender selection of embryos when the mother carried an X-linked disease, and later also for the detection of chromosomal aberrations and aneuploidy screening. In 2007, 280 PCR-based PGDs for monogenic diseases were carried out, for over 50 different monogenic indications, including HLA typing, and 127 FISH-based diagnoses mainly for translocations. the genetic aspects of male infertility (W. Lissens) investigates the genetic causes for male infertility (eg maturation arrest of spermatogenesis or Sertoli cell-only syndrome) by using two different approaches: either through analysis of deletions on the Y-chromosome or through study of mutations in spermatogenesis-related genes, firstly on the X chromosome but also on autosomes. The research group on spermatogonial stem cells and spermatogenesis (H. Tournaye) investigates the possibilities of spermatogonial stem cell culture, storage and transplantation for treating chemotherapy-induced sterility or any other sterility caused by the loss or the lack of spermatogonial stem cells. Pharmacology Signal transduction of IGF-I on cytokine production in the immune system 2

Diabetic Research Center: Cell Differentiation Lab Generate new insulin-producing, glucose-regulated "beta" cells Regenerate beta cells in the pancreas Transplantation in diabetes patients Bayer HealthCare donates 140,000 euro to the VUB research into haemophilia for the development of a more efficient and safer gene therapy, under the leadership of Prof. Thierry Vandendriessche, researcher at the VUB. Gene therapy of hemophila is introducing a functional FVIII or FIX gene copy into the appropriate target cells could ultimately provide a cure for hemophilic patients. Several cell types have been explored for hemophilia gene therapy, including hepatocytes, muscle, endothelial and hematopoietic cells. Both nonviral and viral vectors have been considered for the development of hemophilia gene therapy, including transposons, γ-retroviral, lentiviral, adenoviral and adeno-associated viral vectors. Several of these strategies have resulted in stable correction of the bleeding diathesis in hemophilia A and B murine as well as canine models, paving the way towards clinical trials. 4 Laboratory for Molecular and Cellular Therapy
This lab conducted a clinical research program (phase I/II) in which these autologous antigen presenting dendritic cells (DCs) have been evaluated in small cohorts of patients with advanced melanoma (skin cancer). Professor Kris Thielemans has a dual appointment in both institutions. To optimize the transfer of its translational research activities, LMCT has established an HIV-Cell Therapy Unit and a Cancer-Cell Therapy Unit Recently, promising results have been obtained with autologous Trimix DC therapy based on patented Trimix technology, developed by LMCT. Cell differentiation team studies cell differentiation and tissue regeneration in the pancreas generate new insulin-producing, glucose-regulated "beta" cells that can be used for transplantation in diabetes patients and ways to regenerate beta cells in the pancreas Beta Cell Therapy in Diabetes, which has its central facilities on the VUB-Medical Campus. Hematology Stem cell processing and clinical transplantation Homing of mesenchymal stem cell in bone marrow Haematological malignancies; B cell malignancy 4

5 the Grand Place, since 1988 a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
The Atomium is a symbolic 103-metre (338 ft) tall structure that was built for the 1958 World’s Fair. It consists of nine steel spheres connected by tubes, and forms a model of an iron crystal (specifically, a unit cell). The architect A. Waterkeyn devoted the building to science.

9 Holland . The last major flood in the Netherlands took place in early February 1953, when a huge storm caused the collapse of several dikes in the southwest of the Netherlands. More than 1,800 people drowned in the ensuing inundations. The Dutch government subsequently decided on a large-scale program of public works (the "Delta Works") to protect the country against future flooding. The project took more than thirty years to complete.

11 Technology Transfer Interface (TTI) Free University of Brussels, Belgium
TTI is the gateway between the university’s research & expertise and industry. They take care of all things related to knowledge transfer and business development. They provide follow-up and advice to researchers at every phase of a collaboration with third parties.
