Starter: Answer the questions below. Continuous and Discontinuous Key Words: Key Words: Histogram, variation, continuous, discontinuous 05/02/2022 1. Give an adaptation an animal has for a hot and then a cold climate. 2. Explain why skin colour is both an environmental and inherited variation. 3. Who was this man and what did he do?

1. Give an adaptation an animal has for a hot and then a cold climate. 2. Explain why skin colour is both an environmental and inherited variation. 3. Who was this man and what did he do? HOT Large surface area to body Thin fur Less body fat Hunt at night COLD small surface area to body Thick fur More body fat Camouflage You inherit skin colour from parents but the amount of sun your skin receives changes your skin colour. Gregor Mendel: Studied variation in plants and how they are passed from generation to generation. Considered the ‘father ‘ of genetics.

Keywords: Histogram, variation, continuous, discontinuous Learning Outcomes:  Describe the difference between continuous and discontinuous  Represent variation in a species using graphs LOb: Understand the difference between continuous and discontinuous and how they are represented. Did you know… what makes hair curly is the shape of the follicle (the part of the skin that grows the hair). Curly hair is dryer because it is harder for oil (produced in the scalp) to travel down the hair strand.

Continuous Variation Normally something you can measure. Is a number within a range. 102 cm 182 cm 182 – 103 = 80cm RANGE = 80cm

Hand span Height Weight Other Continuous Variations

Discontinuous Variation Is something you have or don’t have. Something you can do or not do. It doesn’t have a number range.

Mini Quiz Review: Write the numbers 1  6 and the letter C for continuous, D for discontinuous. 1. Amount of female cows on a farm 2. Weight of a baby 3. How many have green, blue or brown eyes 4. The length of a mouse 5. Total number of tongue rollers Discontinuous Continuous Discontinuous 6. The hand span of 7 individuals Continuous

Keywords: Histogram, variation, continuous, discontinuous Learning Outcomes: Describe the difference between continuous and discontinuous  Represent variation in a species using graphs LOb: Understand the difference between continuous and discontinuous and how they are represented. Did you know… what makes hair curly is The shape of the follicle (the part of the skin that grows the hair. Curly hair is dryer because it is harder for oil (produced in the scalp) to travel down the hair strand.

Representing Continuous variation using Data

Question. Which graph is a discontinuous graph Characteristics that are discontinuous should be plotted on a bar graph.

This is a histogram. Continuous variation should be shown as a histogram. A line is drawn to show the graph shape. Histograms normally produce bell curve a bell curve also called normal distribution normal distribution. Why do you think it gets called this?

Activity: For each scenario draw a box next to it you think it should have a bar graph or a curve line for a histogram 1.Average leaf size 2.Maximum sprint speed 3.Hair colour 4.Shoe size 5.Length of forearm Bar GraphHistogram

Review 1. Average leaf size 2. Maximum sprint speed 3. Hair colour 4. Shoe size 5. Length of your forearm Histogram Bar graph Histogram

TASK: Collect discontinuous data and represent it. EYE COLOUR BlueGreenDark Brown Light Brown (Hazel) Other Number of pupilsIIIIII Go to as many students as you can and count whether they have a particular eye colour |||||||| ||

TASK: Collect continuous data and represent it. Go to as many students as you can and measure there pinkie finger length. Length (cm) 3- 3.5 3.6- 4 4.1- 4.5 4.6- 5 5.1- 5.5 5.6- 6 6.1- 6.5 6.6- 7 7.1- 7.5 Number of pupils III IIIIIIIIII |||

Continuous variation is variation we can measure in between catogries. e.g. Height, weight. Discontinuous variation is variation you have or don’t have. e.g. blood group, gender, eye colour. Continuous variation can be displayed using a histogram and discontinuous variation can be displayed using a bar graph.

CharacteristicEnvironmentalInheritedBoth Height body mass blood group scar Plenary: Answer the questions below 1. Which characteristic is discontinuous? 2. Which characteristic is environmental? 3. What graph would be used for scars? 4. Which characteristic is both environment and inherited? 5. Write a sentence to describe what you have learnt today. √ √ √ √ Blood group Scar Bar chart Body mass
