2 INTRODUCTION Psychiatric mental health nursing is a specialized area of nursing practice committed to promising mental health through the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of human responses to mental health problems and psychiatric disorders, Psychiatric nurses provide comprehensive, patient – centered mental health and psychiatric care and outcome evaluation in a variety settings across the entire continuum of care. Mental health nursing occurs at three levels.

4 BASIC ROLE OF PSYCHIATRIC NURSE Assist clients to regain or improve their coping skill or abilities and prevent their disability. Assist the clients with self – care activities. Administer psychological interventions Provide psychoeducation Promotion of mental health, physical health of patients Assist in overall health promotion

5 BASIC ROLE OF PSYCHIATRIC NURSE (CONT) General health teaching Health screening and appropriate referral services for treatment

6 EXPANDED ROLE Expanded role of nursing means engagement of nurse role within the boundaries of the profession. It is the responsibility assumed by a nurse within the field of practice.

8 NURSE PRACTIONER Professionally qualified nurses with specialized training and educational preparation assume autonomous responsibility for the clinical role functions. They are accountable for their own practice and prepared to perform services independent of other disciplines in the full range of delivery settings. They prescribe pharmacologic agents, order diagnostic and laboratory testings and provide independent psychological therapies in the patients.

9 CASE MANAGEMENT Case management involves advocating the rights of the patient, by offering social and legal services related to mental health. Nurse act as a coordinator between patients, family and health care system.

10 NURSE RESEARCHER Nurse conducts independent research and generate research evidences for the best psychiatric nursing practices. The research activities carried by the nurse researcher will be disseminate the research findings in field to enhance the research activities.

11 CLINICAL SUPERVISION The expanded role of a nurse include the clinical supervision of nurses, students and other health professionals to further develop their clinical practice skills.

12 PEER CONSULTATION This process is an education processthat focuses on professional growth and development rather than staff performance evaluation. The nurse conducts ongoing peer consultation and peer supervision to meet the standard requirement and improve quality.

13 NURSE COUNSELOR Identify psychological problems of individual or family, provide appropriate counseling and help them to discover effective ways of dealing with these,

14 PATIENT EDUCATOR Some settings hire nurses with responsibility assigned to them for patient and family education. Nurse teach about disease management program in public sector programs, this role could include prevention, education and outreach.

15 RISK MANAGER Nurses who work as risk managers are charged with the task of decreasing the probability of adverse outcomes related to patient care. They engage in identifying risk factors, individual and system wise problems, corrective actions and the implementation of strategies to reduce risk and prevent loss.

16 EXTENDED ROLE OF PSYCHIATRIC NURSE It is the responsibility assumed by a nurse beyond traditional functioning of the nurse and it is the scope of nursing services outside the hospital. Nurse in extended roles work in a variety of areas like schools / colleges, private practices, military, primary care center, prison / jail. Home health agencies, behavior care companies and disaster management campus.

18 CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST Psychiatric nurse who have a specialized training can provide services in different sub – areas of psychiatric nursing such as child and adolescent, adult, geriatric, consultation liaison, substance abuse, eating disorders etc.

19 CONSULTATION LIASION Consultation – liaison activities take place in general health care settings such as rehabilitation centers, schools, nursing homes and outpatient clinics. Their role is to focus on rendering psychological care to non – psychiatric clients.

20 COMMUNITY PSYCHIATRIC NURSES They provide support to people through difficult periods of their illness and see patients in their own homes, they also play a valuable role in helping the patient’s family to understand and cope with the illness.

21 SCHOOL HEALTH NURSES Provide psychiatric mental health services to the children in school. Services may include screening of children having behavioural disorder or emotional or scholastic problems and providing counseling to those required.

22 FORENSIC PSYCHIATRIC NURSE Psychiatric nursing includes the provision of successful health care and security of patient rights. Nurse must proceed to strengthen the laws that protect the patients rights and ensure their execution in practice. Forensic nurses provides help to the people having legal issues related to their fundamental rights and criminal or civil responsibilities.

23 NURSE EDUCATORS Provide training and education to the peripheral health care professional regarding management and treatment of patients with mental illness.

24 GERIATRIC NURSE They are trained to provide a comprehensive care for aging and elderly individual.

25 OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSE They practice in industrial settings to help and improve the mental health and safety of workers and other community groups.

26 REHABILITATION NURSE They are specialized in helping peoples with disabilities and chronic illness. They help them to attain optimal health functions, health and adapt to an altered lifestyle. Rehabilitation nurse assist their patients in their move towards independence by setting realistic goals and treatment plans.

27 PARISH NURSING It is the intentional integration of the practice of nursing with the beliefs of areligious community. A parish nurse encourages physical and spiritual health and wholeness among persons with psychiatric illness and their families.
