PART 2 : CEMENT (BOGUE'S COMPOUND)
2
Bogue's Compound: when water is added to cement it react with the ingredients of the cement chemically & results in the formation of complex chemical compounds terms as BOGUES compounds. Formation of these compounds in cement is not simultaneous:
4
1.Tri-calcium Aluminate It is about 5-11%(normally about 10.5%) of cement Formed in 24 hrs of addition of water Max. Evolution of heat of hydration Heat of hydration is 865 J/g
5
2. Tetra Calcium Aluminoferrite It is about 8-14%(normally about 9%) of cement Formed in 24 hrs of addition of water Heat of hydration is 420 J/g
6
3. Tricalcium silicate it is about 25-50%(normally about 40%) of cement It is formed within a week responsible for strength to cement in its early ages. Heat of hydration is 500 J/g a cement with more C3S is better for cold weather concrete
7
4. Dicalcium silicate it is about 8-14%(normally about 9%) of cement This compound forms very slowly and takes about a year or so for its formation responsible for progressive strength of the cement in the later stages. Heat of hydration is 260 J/g
8
Bogues compounds generates heats in the order C3A > C3S > C4AF > C2S
