Acid Nomenclature Acids are an important class of hydrogen-containing compounds. For now, an acid is defined as a substance that produces hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. There are two common types of acids: binary acids oxyacids
2
Binary Acids a compound formed between: Rules for naming binary acids:
hydrogen and a monatomic anion –OR– hydrogen and a polyatomic ion that does not contain oxygen Rules for naming binary acids: 1. Begin with the prefix hydro- 2. Add the name (or root) of the nonmetallic anion 3. Add the suffix –ic and the word acid
3
Binary Acids hydro + anion nonmetal root + ic + acid example: HCl
hydrochloric acid example: H2S hydrosulfuric acid
4
ate-ic-ite-ous Oxyacids a compound formed between:
hydrogen and a polyatomic ion that contains oxygen Rules for naming oxyacids: 1. Name the polyatomic ion 2. Change “-ate” to -ic ; “-ite” to –ous 3. Add the word acid 4. The oxoanion prefixes “per-” and “hypo-” remain ate-ic-ite-ous
5
Oxyacids example: HBrO4 perbromic acid HBrO3 bromic acid HBrO2
bromous acid hypobromous acid HBrO
6
Acid Nomenclature Name the following compounds: H2SO4 sulfuric acid
hydrophosphoric acid H3P perchloric acid HClO4
7
Acid Nomenclature Write formulas for the following acids:
hydrofluoric acid H+ F- HF phosphoric acid H+ PO43- H3PO4 H2SO3 sulfurous acid H+ SO32-
8
Base Nomenclature Bases are another important class of chemical compounds. For now, a base is defined as a substance that produces hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water. Rules for naming bases: “same as usual”
9
Salt Nomenclature Salts are another important class of chemical compounds. A salt is an ionic compound composed of a cation from a base and an anion from an acid. Rules for naming salts: “same as usual”
10
Acid, Base, & Salt Nomenclature
Identify the following as an acid, base or salt; then, name the compound: HNO3 acid nitric acid NaOH base sodium hydroxide NaNO3 salt sodium nitrate Ca(OH)2 base calcium hydroxide H2S acid hydrosulfuric acid
