2 Grant Wood Biography Born on a farm near Anamosa, Iowa 1891
His family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa after his father died (Wood was 10). After graduating from high school he enrolled in art school, taught art, learned carpentry, and took care of his mom and sister, Nan In 1920 Grant traveled to Europe to study many styles of painting

3 Grant Wood Biography Soon after his trip to Germany, Grant found his own style of painting. He decided to paint simple scenes of the land and the people of the Midwest whom he knew and loved. His most famous painting is American Gothic Grant’s paintings became popular because his paintings made people feel better during the Great Depression. Wood died in at age 50 of liver cancer

Grant had discovered a farmhouse with an unusual window based on Gothic architecture. He liked contrast of European window on American farmhouse. He used his family dentist and his own sister, Nan, as the farmer and his daughter. Everyone seemed to have an opinion about it. Some thought it was making fun of farmers others thought he was honoring them.

The depression caused many people to lose their jobs and savings. It made people feel better to look at Grant’s paintings of beautiful farm lands and proud, hard-working families who helped make American great.

8 Andrew Wyeth Biography
Born 1917 in Chadd’s Ford, PA. Youngest of five children, grew up surrounded by artists (his dad was illustrator of Treasure Island book). He was home schooled from 2nd grade on because of his frail health At age 20 he had his first show in NYC. It was a great success.

Wyeth's favorite subject is the land and inhabitants around his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and those near his summer home in Cushing, Maine. One of the most well-known images in 20th century American art is his painting Christina’s World (1948) Death and decay is a major theme in his work and common objects like buckets, boats, sleds which often symbolized people not actually in the picture Received the National Medal of Arts in 2007 from President George W. Bush
