2 Female Hair Regulations
Hairstyles must allow for the proper fit of headgear. In uniform, hair may touch, but not fall below a horizontal line level with the lower edge of the back of the collar. Ponytails may extend up to 3” below the bottom of the collar. Layered hairstyles are authorized, provided that the layers present a smooth graduated appearance. Ethnic hairstyles are permitted provided they are within uniform standards.

Barrettes must be similar to hair color. Headbands, combs, scrunchies, claws, butterfly clips as well as neon hair ties, clips and pins are NOT AUTHORIZED. Bizarre hairstyles and faddish or outrageous multicolor hair are NOT AUTHORIZED.

5 Female Hair Regulations
Can try searching “NJROTC + Hair” on Youtube. More than 20 authorized hairstyles can be found at and includes Ponytails, Pixie Cut, Naturally Curly, Cornrows, Multiple Braids and Locks.

6 Female Hair Regulations Proper Wear of the Cover

7 Male Hair Regulations NJROTC does not require a buzz cut but hair will be neat, clean, trimmed and present a well-groomed appearance. Faddish styles and outrageous multicolored hair are not authorized.

8 Male Hair Regulations Hair shall be no longer than four inches and may not touch the ears, collar, extend below eyebrows. The bulk of the hair shall not exceed approximately two inches. One narrow part is authorized. Sideburns shall not extend below the middle of the ear, shall be of even width (not flared).

11 Male Hair Regulations Braided or multi-color hair is NOT AUTHORIZED.
Designs SHALL NOT be cut into the hair…even if you carve “USA” into the back.

12 Facial Hair Regulations
Mustaches authorized, must be neat and trimmed, not extending past the lip. No other facial hair is permitted.

13 Female Cosmetics Cosmetics may be applied in good taste so that colors blend with natural skin tone. Exaggerated or faddish cosmetic styles are not authorized with the uniform and shall not be worn.   Lipstick colors shall be conservative and complement the individual.  Long false eyelashes shall not be worn when in uniform.

14 Fingernail Regulations
Men: Fingernails shall not extend past fingertips.  They shall be kept clean. Women: Shall not be excessive in length. ¼” past tip of finger. Nail polish color shall complement the skin tone.

15 Jewelry Necklaces must not be visible. Tuck it in or take it off.
Rings – One per hand (male and female) Thumb rings NOT AUTHORIZED Wedding/engagement ring also allowed Wristwatch/Bracelet – One on each wrist

16 Earrings Men: Not authorized while in uniform.
Women: One per ear, centered on the earlobe. Must be small gold or silver ball.

17 Body Piercing Rings or Studs are not Authorized in the nose,
eyebrows, tongue, lips or other areas of the face or body while in uniform.

18 Uniforms Only black socks are allowed. No ankle socks in uniform.
Only black navy shoes allowed (no sneakers). White crew neck or V-neck t-shirts only. Only the Black BMA sweater and black V-neck navy pullover sweater are authorized. Black V-Neck navy pull-over sweater is an optional uniform item that is issued to cadets.

19 Standards When Out of Navy Uniform
Follow NJROTC regulations when in NJROTC spaces. Follow BMA uniform/grooming standards found in BMA Student Handbook when outside NJROTC spaces.
