1 DO NOW 1/15 How were the Zulu, Boxer, and Sepoy rebellions similar? How were they different? Give at least 2 similarities and 2 differences.

2 The Opium War In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, China was fine on their own. Isolationism was working well for them!

3 However… Great Britain was determined to open up China’s doors to trade. So they found a way in…

4 The Chinese willingly bought opium in mass quantities!

5 Uh Oh… China tried to stop the opium trade, and a war broke out between them and Britain called the Opium War.

6 Britain Won… Which begins the emergence of foreign influence of China. (Remember the Boxers?)

7 The First Opium War (p.270) After reading the text, answer:
How did the English use opium to take advantage of China? THEN, Finish your yellow “Reactions to Imperialism” Chart!

8 DO NOW 1/16 Do you think the Chinese were JUSTIFIED in starting a war over opium? Why or why not?
