CITIES A large town at the center of the civilization located near major source of transportation with a high population and where important buildings are located. Historic Example: PAST: Developed by rivers Modern Example: TODAY: Develop by highways Group Discussion Question: List the similarities and differences you see between the historic and modern examples.

7 PAST: War/Power Picks Ruler or King TODAY: People Vote for Leader
Government & Laws: Creates and keeps order in society through laws. The government's responsibility is also to provide protection through the military. Historic Example: PAST: War/Power Picks Ruler or King Modern Example: TODAY: People Vote for Leader Group Discussion Question: List the similarities and differences you see between the historic and modern examples.

Writing: A form of communication used for written records. Writing was used for laws, farming records, and religious documents. Historic Example: PAST: Pictures represent words Modern Example: PAST: Letters combine to make words Group Discussion Question: List the similarities and differences you see between the historic and modern examples.

Specialized Jobs & Division of Labor: Someone that is trained with purpose or knowledge to accomplish tasks so the civilization can be successful. Example: Scribes were the writers in early civilizations. Farmers were responsible for feeding the civilization. Historic Example: PAST: PAPER DID NOT EXIST. SCRIBES USED CLAY TABLETS Modern Example: TODAY: PAPER IS EASY TO USE & CARRY. IT IS MADE OF TREES Group Discussion Question: List the similarities and differences you see between the historic and modern examples.

Social Class: Dividing society based on social and economic ($) status with upper class at the top and lower class at the bottom. Historic Example: PAST: King was the upper class, slaves were the lowest class. Modern Example: TODAY: Money determines which social class you are: Upper, Middle, Lower Group Discussion Question: List the similarities and differences you see between the historic and modern examples.

Religion: The belief in and worship of one or more gods that helped explain the world around them. Historic Example: PAST: More polytheistic religions [based on many gods that have help the civilization] Modern Example: TODAY: More monotheistic religions [based on one god that helps individuals reach inner peace] Group Discussion Question: List the similarities and differences you see between the historic and modern examples.

Art & Architecture : Different styles of construction and art were added to the buildings to show the power and talent of the civilization Historic Example: PAST: Unique columns and arches used to create buildings design. Made from natural materials. Modern Example: TODAY: Current design made of manmade materials. Group Discussion Question: List the similarities and differences you see between the historic and modern examples.
