Once upon a time, there was a woodcutter his name was Cuội
Once upon a time, there was a woodcutter his name was Cuội. Everybody called him chú Cuội. He was very poor.He had to work hard to support his life.

One day, on his way home Chú Cuội saw a baby tiger, he became very frightened.

So he threw the axe away and climbed up to the tree for hiding
So he threw the axe away and climbed up to the tree for hiding. The baby tiger had died from chú Cuội ’s axe.

When mother tiger saw her dead baby
When mother tiger saw her dead baby. She went to the river bank, picked some leaves up from a tree and chewed them. Then she put them on the wound of the baby tiger.

Chú Cuội was very surprised because the baby tiger sprang back to life and they both ran off. Chú Cuội could hardly believe what he had seen.

When the tiger had gone Cuội went down to river bank and found a strange tree. He took home and plant in the front yard. He named this tree cây đa (banyan tree).

Chú Cuội told his wife to respect and care for the tree and never to throw dirty water on it. Because he knew that it had the power to bring the dead back to life.

One day, Cuội came home early
One day, Cuội came home early. He saw his wife was busy with the housework. Forgetting what her husband had told her about the tree, she threw wash water over the tree instead of fresh water.

Immediately the banyan tree raised itself up and began to fly up to the sky. Cuội held fast to its roots trying to pull the tree back.

The more he pulled the tree, the more it flew up to the sky
The more he pulled the tree, the more it flew up to the sky. Only when it landed on the Moon.

In the moonlight people can still see Cuội ’s shadow beneath the banyan tree upon the Moon.
At the time of mid-autumn when the moon is bright and round, children gather to play lanterns. The parents serve moon cake to the children and tell them fairy tales.
