3. Types of academic licenses at LiU
Floating Network License (FNL) for teachers, researchers and PhD-students
For academic research and teaching preparation. No commercial use allowed.
Can be used for Thesis or Diploma work (exjobb).
Includes free technical support from COMSOL
Can be used at the university.
Can be used outside the university by using an internet connection or License Borrowing.
Class-Kit License for students (CKL)
Can be used for course lab exercises or home assignments by students enrolled in an ordinary course.
Can be used by teachers for course preparations.
Installed in computer labs, teachers' or students' computers.
Technical support is only provided to the teacher or designated teaching assistant. Students have no access to technical support from COMSOL.

License borrowing is enabled for the FNL-license at LiU. A maximum of 30 days borrow period restricted in the license file. This value can be lowered by local system administrators at LiU if needed. If the maximum of 30 days should increased, a request by the system adminstrators must be made to COMSOL AB. More information:

4. Special note on ”exjobb” at commercial companies
The university FNL license can be used for "exjobb" at a commercial company providing the following requirements are fulfilled:
No parts of the diploma project must contain protected commercial information; All results of the thesis must be published publicly as free academic knowledge.
The Programs must be installed on a computer owned by the student or the university.
A COMSOL representative must approve the diploma work prior to start
If the requirements above are not fulfilled, a commercial license of COMSOL must be used for "exjobb".

7. Installation
Contact your local system administrator to get access to COMSOL.
Updating an existing COMSOL installation, to add modules newly added to the license:
Start button ->COMSOL -> Multiphysics->COMSOL Launchers, double click “Setup”
In the installer, choose “Update license” and follow the wizard

8. Running COMSOL A COMSOL license can be run:
On a computer at the university that is connected to the license server
On a computer outside the university:
That is connected to the license server (with e.g. VPN). COMSOL can then be run:
Locally
With ”Remote Desktop”, VNC or similar
You can use ”License Borrowing” if you are without an Internet connection (see the next page)

9. License Borrowing
”License Borrowing” makes it possible to borrow a license from the license server to a computer that will be disconnected from the network.
To borrow a license you should:
Be connected to the license server and start COMSOL.
Choose File and then Licensed and Used Products. Press Borrow….
Choose the products to borrow and mark several by holding the Ctrl-key. The maximum amount of days to borrow is set to 30 days, but can be less, depending on what the system administrator has chosen.
