1 Tava-Pache-Pace The Vaisnava Verse Book
Afterwords to the Nectar of Instruction The Vaisnava Verse Book rev AÑJANA SUTA ACADEMY

2 Preface We make this revision of this, NOI as Vaisnava verse book and study guide, on 2019 July 6. We have marked more Things To Do (TTD) but that will always be the case. “No one ever finished a poem, they just stop working on it”, some French guy.

3 “Those who are innocent but simply carried away by bad association should be shown favor if they are eager to receive proper instructions from pure devotees.” NOI-5 “The process of speaking in spiritual circles is to say something upheld by the scriptures. One should at once quote from scriptural authority to back up what he is saying.” BGp 7.15

4 It has long impressed us that the citations in Srila Prabhupada’s Nectar of Instruction are not just some citations to support the ideas there, rather they are the essential citations used by the Acharyas to illustrate the point under discussion

5 Memorize Them Research Them
The NOI then becomes a collection of essential, memorable, verses, and following those cited verses to their sources acts as an excellent study-guide for the whole Bhaktivedanta Library. Memorize Them Research Them

6 NOTABLE VERSES - Cover to Cover

7 Preface

8 Therefore Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura has sung:
rūpa-raghunātha-pade ha-ibe ākuti kabe hāma bujhaba se yugala-pīriti This is the first song in Prarthana, a summary of the whole book and all of the stages of our spiritual life. One of only two songs that Srila Prabhupada cites in entirety in his Purports. The other is Narada Muni Bhajai Vina in the Sixth Canto. See Except for the last couplet: Rupa-raghunatha-pade rahu mora asa Prarthana koriye sada Narottama Das …the eight verses known as Śikṣāṣṭaka.

9 TEXT ONE

10 The Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya 22.31) says:
In Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (6.1.9–10) Parīkṣit Mahārāja placed a number of intelligent questions before Śukadeva Gosvāmī. We are wondering about putting this on our memory list. Of the ten types of offenses one can commit while chanting the holy name of the Lord, this offense is called nāmno balād yasya hi pāpa-buddhiḥ, The Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya 22.31) says: kṛṣṇa – sūrya-sama; māyā haya andhakāra yāhāṅ kṛṣṇa, tāhāṅ nāhi māyāra adhikāra

11 It was in anger that Hanumān set fire to Laṅkā,
In His Śikṣāṣṭaka Lord Caitanya wrote, tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā: “One should be humbler than the grass and more tolerant than the tree.” The First and this Third Text are cited in NOI, so memorize them first! Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu became angry with the miscreant brothers Jagāi and Mādhāi, It was in anger that Hanumān set fire to Laṅkā, “The demon king decided to inflict …”

12 It was in anger that Hanumān set fire to Laṅkā,
In His Śikṣāṣṭaka Lord Caitanya wrote, tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā: “One should be humbler than the grass and more tolerant than the tree.” The First and this Third Text are cited in NOI, so memorize them first! Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu became angry with the miscreant brothers Jagāi and Mādhāi, It was in anger that Hanumān set fire to Laṅkā, “The demon king decided to inflict …”

13 Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (1.5.10–11): na yad vacaś citra-padaṁ harer yaśo…
In his Anuvṛtti explanation of Upadeśāmṛta, Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura writes… See Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (1.5.10–11): na yad vacaś citra-padaṁ harer yaśo… tad-vāg-visargo janatāgha-viplavo… Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says: śarīra avidyā jāla,     jaḍendriya tāhe kāla,… Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Antya 6.227) it is stated: jihvāra lālase yei iti-uti dhāya śiśnodara-parāyaṇa kṛṣṇa nāhi pāya

14 Lord Caitanya has said, bhāla nā khāibe āra bhāla nā paribe: “Do not dress luxuriously and do not eat delicious foodstuffs.” (Cc., Antya 6.236) Prema-vivarta, chapter seven, Śrī Jagadānanda Paṇḍita says: vairāgī bhāi grāmya-kathā nā śunibe kāne grāmya-vārtā nā kahibe yabe milibe āne . . .

15 In Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (7.5.30), Prahlāda Mahārāja has said:
matir na kṛṣṇe parataḥ svato vā … This leads to a little preaching event of Prahlada to his materialistic father that is excellent lesson in the art of preaching.

16 TEXT TWO

17 This is stated in Bhagavad-gītā (9.13):
mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha … [‘tu’, means but, so this verse is a contrast] Daiva-bhūtātma-hetavaḥ See In Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (1.2.9) Śrī Sūta Gosvāmī describes the proper human dharma in this way: dharmasya hy āpavargyasya . . . [This introduces several verses to be memorized from SB 1.2, Suta Siksa] Jīvasya tattva jijñāsā: the real purpose of life… [This is the verse after the previous. Only memorizes this extract to start with?]

18 According to Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the endeavor of philosophical speculators to write volumes of books on dry philosophy devoid of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is entirely futile. The work of karmīs who write volumes of books on economic development also falls within the category of atyāhāra. [Where from is this citation?] Bhukti-kāmīs, who are interested in material hap-piness… [ first mantra of Śrī Īśopaniṣad: īśāvāsyam idaṁ sarvaṁ . . .  ”…this material world is designed by the complete arrangement of the Lord…” [Iso Invocation. Learn Invo., Text 1 and 15]

19 TEXT THREE

20 (4) acting according to regulative principles (such as śravaṇaḿ kīrtanaḿ viṣṇoḥ smaraṇam [SB ] Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu (1.1.11), has defined devotional service as follows: anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaḿ . . . Bhagavad-gītā (4.34): tad viddhi praṇipātena Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad, tad-vijñānārthaḿ sa gurum evābhigacchet: [MU ] brahmāṇḍa bhramite kona bhāgyavān jīva … (Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya )

21 Bhagavad-gītā (9.4):. . . mayā tatam idaḿ sarvaḿ
All the parts of the instrument, including the electronic functions, are made from different combinations and interactions of the five basic types of material energy — namely, bhūmi, jala, agni, vāyu and ākāśa. See BG 7.4 The devotees find the correct means by which everything can be utilized in the service of the Lord (nirbandhaḥ kṛṣṇa-sambandhe yuktaḿ vairāgyam ucyate). See purport

22  avaśya rakṣibe kṛṣṇa: “Kṛṣṇa will surely protect me and give me help for the successful execution of devotional service.” This is called confidence. See archives, “saranagati…” and Search Page for “avasya”.  In this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement there are four basic regulative principles, forbidding illicit sex, meat-eating, gambling and intoxication. See SB

23 Once Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was asked by one of His householder devotees about the general principles of Vaiṣṇavism and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu immediately replied, asat-saṅga-tyāga, – ei vaiṣṇava-ācāra See: Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura has therefore recommended, tāṅdera caraṇa sevi bhakta-sane vāsa… See: Songs of the Vaisnava Acharyas,  Nama-sankirtana, [hari haraye namah krsna yadavaya namah]. Bhagavad-gītā (2.69): yā niśā sarva-bhūtānāṁ …

24 In the Tenth Canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam it is stated: “One must be calmly convinced . . .
It is further stated in the Tenth Canto: “Although mental speculators . . Note: In our translation of the Anuvrtti these are sited as Srimad Bhagavatam ( ) - “ye ‘nye ‘ravindaksa …”. In the older NOI it said “Seventh Canto”, but in the Vedabase edition it has been changed to 10th Canto.  In Bhagavad-gītā (9.31), the Supreme Personality of Godhead assures Arjuna, kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati… NOTE: Maybe just this second Pada is enough for memorize. Bhagavad-gītā (2.40) Kṛṣṇa says: nehābhikrama-nāśo ’sti . . .

25 Sometimes a person will give up his ordinary material engagements and out of sentiment take shelter of the lotus feet of the Supreme Lord and thus begin the preliminary execution of devotional service.” See: , “tyaktvā sva-dharmaṁ caraṇāmbujaṁ harer…” As confirmed by Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam ( ), NOTE: This is part of the prayers of Prahlada Maharaja, SB , this verse is used repeatedly and essential to memorize, and we also have memorized the first verse Maybe you want to memorize the whole Stotra for recitation for Lord Nrsmhadeva.

26 Bhagavad-gītā (9.13): mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha . . .

27 TEXT FOUR

28 Bhagavad-gītā (2.62) it is stated, sańgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ: one's desires and ambitions develop according to the company one keeps. Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya ): nitya-siddha kṛṣṇa-prema 'sādhya' kabhu naya śravaṇādi-śuddha-citte karaye udaya In the first stanza of His Śrī Śikṣāṣṭaka, Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu says: ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam [Cc. Antya 20.12]

29 Not only is the chanter of the mahā-mantra purified, but the heart of anyone who happens to hear the transcendental vibration of Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare is also cleansed. This was explained by Ṭhākura Haridāsa when Caitanya Mahāprabhu inquired from him how living entities lower than human beings can be delivered from material bondage. See CC

30 As stated in the First Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.6
This was actually proved by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Himself when He passed through the forest of Jhārikhaṇḍa. See [CC 2.27] As stated in the First Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.2.6 sa vai puḿsāḿ paro dharmo On the contrary, by taking milk and bananas the snake simply becomes more poisonous (kevalaḿ viṣa-vardhanam) TTD - Reference

31 See SB 4.11.13, but looking for better source, maybe 9-yogendra
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has also warned, viṣayīra anna khāile duṣṭa haya mana: "By eating food prepared by worldly people, one s mind becomes wicked. See CC within the middle status of devotional service is expected to love the Supreme Personality of Godhead, make friends with the devotees, show favor to the ignorant and reject the jealous and demoniac. See SB , but looking for better source, maybe 9-yogendra

32  Supposed to spend at least fifty percent of his income on the service of the Lord and His devotees. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī has set such an example See [CC ]

33 TEXT FIVE

34 Such a a kaniṣṭha-adhikārī is described in the Eleventh Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam ( ): arcāyām eva haraye The madhyama-adhikārī is described in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam ( ) in this way: īśvare tad-adhīneṣu Note: Maharaja Nimi x Havir (nine yogendras) The process by which a devotee becomes attached to Kṛṣṇa is described in Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Antya 4.192): dīkṣā-kāle bhakta kare ātma-samarpaṇa, sei-kāle kṛṣṇa tāre kare ātma-sama Dīkṣā, or spiritual initiation, is explained in the Bhakti-sandarbha (283) by Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī: divyaṁ jñānaṁ yato dadyāt Note: Sanatana said body contaminated with sores.

35 Fit for initiation … Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (6. 1
Fit for initiation …  Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (6.1.13) prescribes: tapasā brahmacaryeṇa śamena ca damena ca. Tad-vijñānārthaṁ sa gurum evābhigacchet: when one is interested in the transcendental subject matter of the Absolute Truth, he should be initiated NOTE: Was cited in purport to Text Three from Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam ( ) also prescribes: tasmād guruṁ prapadyeta jijñāsuḥ śreya uttamam.  Note: Maharaja Nimi x Nava yogendra Prabhuddha In Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya 22.69): yāhāra komala śraddhā, se ‘kaniṣṭha’ jana, “One whose faith is soft and pliable . . . NOTE: Sanatana Siksa. Several verses al describing Kanistha to Uttama.

36 …how a Vaiṣṇava could be recognized, the Lord replied:
prabhu kahe, – “yāṅra mukhe śuni eka-bāra kṛṣṇa-nāma, sei pūjya, – śreṣṭha sabākāra” “If one hears a person say even once the word ‘Kṛṣṇa,’ that person should be accepted as the best man out of the common group.” (Cc. Madhya 15.106) Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu continued: “ataeva yāṅra mukhe eka kṛṣṇa-nāma sei ta ’vaiṣṇava, kariha tāṅhāra sammāna” “One who is interested in chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa or who by practice likes to chant Kṛṣṇa’s names should be accepted as a Vaiṣṇava and offered respects as such, at least within one’s mind.” (Cc. Madhya15.111) NOTE; CC are excellent question and answer from Satyarāja Khān all about who is a Vaisnava.

37 divided devotional service into three categories.
śāstra-yukti nāhi jāne dṛḍha, śraddhāvān (Cc. Madhya 22.67) A madhyama-adhikārī is a śraddhāvān, Caitanya caritāmṛta (Madhya 22.64): śraddhāvān jana haya bhakti-adhikārī Again in Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya 22.62) it is said: ‘śraddhā’ - śabde – viśvāsa kahe sudṛḍha niścaya NOTE: These are from the same Sanatana siksa series mentioned above. Bhagavad-gītā is to be accepted as it is, … sarvam etad ṛtaṁ manye yan māṁ vadasi keśava. “O Kṛṣṇa, I totally accept as truth all that You have told me.” (Bg ) especially the last instruction: sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja. “Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me.” (Bg )

38 sevonmukhe hi jihvādau svayam eva sphuraty adaḥ. (BRS. 1. 2. 234)
sevonmukhe hi jihvādau svayam eva sphuraty adaḥ. (BRS ) always chant the holy names of the Lord and accept kṛṣṇa-prasāda.  TTD - Reference
