1 Five Themes of Geography
What is your address? Where on the planet is it found? Location How would you describe the people and places in your town? What makes that location unique? Place What is the greater area around your town like? What are the characteristics of that area of the world? Region What buildings and inventions make it possible to live there comfortably? How have people adapted to the environment to make life better? Human-Environment Interaction When and why did your family move here? What factors cause people to move from place to place? Movement

2 Relative Location Dallas is located about 30 miles east of Ft. Worth. You must know where Ft. Worth is first before you can find Dallas. This is what is meant by relative location – the starting reference point must be located first. 30 miles east

3 Absolute Location Absolute location is a place’s exact spot on the Earth. No first reference point is needed, only a system of plotting location such as an address on a map or a grid system such as longitude and latitude coordinates. McMath MS McMath MS is located at 1300 Jason Drive, Denton, TX, USA, Denton is located at 33oN, 97oW.

4 Place The theme of place describes the physical, man-made, and cultural features that make a location unique in the world. For example, Mexico City, located on a drained lakebed at the foot of a mountain range, combines the cultures of the ancient Aztec empire, colonial Spain, and modern Mexico in its music, art, language, and architecture. La Plaza del Culturas (Plaza of Three Cultures) in Mexico City

5 Region A group of places that have many common features forms a region. The Middle East, for example, is a region of countries that share the Islamic religion and culture, desert landforms and climate, and Arabic, Turkish, and Persian languages.

6 Human-Environment Interaction
People learn to adapt to and use their environment in order to survive. Each different environment will produce different adaptations, or adjustments to the environment, depending on the climate and natural resources available. Inuit Indians of North America build igloos from blocks of ice to live in the Arctic climate

7 Adaptation and Technology
Developments in human technology make it possible to live in places more comfortably then was once possible. Places that once had few people are now inhabited thanks to modern technology such as heating and air conditioning, solar power, and modern transportation. Modern home in Europe with solar panels to provide power

8 Movement The theme of movement deals with the reasons and conditions that cause people to migrate, or move, from one place to another. These include push factors, or problems that drive people out of a place, and pull factors, or benefits that draw people to a place. In the pictures, conditions such as war and hunger are examples of push factors, while factories and jobs are examples of pull factors.
