2 Overview Earning a Degree 101
Degrees & Diplomas in the Faculty of Science Terms to Know Bachelor of Business Administration & Bachelor of Information Systems Academic Information We are here to help!

3 Earning a Degree 101 StFX Degree = 120 credits (126 for B.Sc. in Nursing) Four-Year Degree Pattern = 30 credits per year Degree Patterns – majors, minor, pair, electives, approved electives. Course Requirements – listed in Academic Calendar Declaring Major(s), Adv. Major(s), or Honours -Talk in general about getting a degree. Explain that all students need to earn 120 credits to graduate, with exception of diploma programs and nursing students. -Explain that the four year degree pattern, which many students want to pursue requires students to complete 30 credits each year. -Explain that although the a Bachelor of Arts degree is flexible and provides students with the opportunity to take a wide variety of courses, you cannot just take whatever you want. There is a pattern to your degree and courses requirements that you need to be aware of and fulfilling in order to be eligible to graduate. -All BA and BBA students should declare their major at the end of their second year. Business students have to meet minimum requirements to do a major. We will discuss degree patterns and requirements later.

Twelve credits in one subject, with six credits at the 200 level or higher. As exceptions, language pairs in French, Celtic Studies and Classics may be composed of 12 credits at the 100 level. A student may complete only one pair from a department, and may not complete a pair in the major or minor subject. A pair may not be completed in any of the professional or applied program disciplines: AQUA, BSAD, ENGR, HKIN, HNU, INFO, NURS. 15 Approved Elective The term approved elective is defined differently for human kinetics students and science students. For science students approved electives are normally science or math. For human kinetics students approved electives are anything other than the following professional disciplines: Aquatic Resources Business Administration Engineering Information Systems Human Kinetics Human Nutrition Nursing

27 Did you Know? While earning your degree at StFX, you can…
Change programs Change majors/minors Take courses at another university on a Letter of Permission (LOP) Take a lighter course load Add/drop courses Appeal an academic penalty (other than Probation) Appeal a grade Get an override into a closed course Remind students that there are consequences to dropping courses and to consult with an academic advisor before they do so. Remind them there are deadlines to drop/add courses and for applying for majors and minors. Reinforce that switching into professional courses can be quite competitive, especially HK and BBA. Advise that they have apply for a program change and typically these forms do not get reviewed until May each year?

28 We are here to help!

29 Steps to Ensuring Success at X
Read the Academic Calendar! Attend Class Seek help from appropriate campus resources as needed Time Management Balance between school, work and extracurricular activities -Read calendar to become familiar with program requirements and degree regulations. It is up to the student to take responsibility for their designing his/her own educational plan. Recommend the sections of the academic calendar that they should become familiar with. - Reinforce the fact the there are lots of services of campus to help, depending on the type of difficulty you may be having

31 Common Misconceptions
I have to take a full course load. I will lose all of my credits from first year if I switch programs. It is better to stay in a course and fail than to drop a course. I can complete a pair in Human Nutrition. I can complete a pair with RELS 110 and RELS 120. I need to fill out a new declaration form if I change a pair. I feel like we will discuss each of these mis-conceptions as we go; however it might be a nice way to check for understanding. Asking each students the answer to these mis-conceptions.
