PLATE UMPIRE… With Runner(s) In Scoring Position FOUL BALL COVERAGE
Fair or Foul Catch or No Catch Tag-up of Lead Runner If batted ball is hit to Left Field foul line… Plate Umpire will straddle third base foul line the same as he/she did when there were no runners in scoring position. If the batted ball is hit to Right Field foul line… because there is a runner or runner(s) in scoring position… Plate Umpire must back up and look down first base-right field foul line. Remember… Plate Umpire has not only the catch/no catch call… but also the tag-up of the lead runner. Once the Plate Umpire has the “fair or foul” call… then the catch/no catch call one must remember that if there are less than two outs… runner(s) will be tagging up and perhaps trying to advance. This means the Plate Umpire will go to the “Holding Zone” or to “Home Plate.” All umpires must know: “How many outs” and “Where The Runner(s) are” and “Who has the responsibility” if there is a play at each and every base. 00 00

TWO-PERSON UMPIRE SYSTEM
BASE UMPIRE IS NEVER POSITIONED BETWEEN F4 & 2B MAY NEED TO TAKE LONE RUNNER TO 3B… IF PLATE UMPIRE STAYS HOME BASE UMPIRE WILL CLEAN BASES AS NEEDED (Request time to clean base from Plate Umpire) (Plate Umpire is only umpire to call time because he/she has best view whether all play has been completed) BASE UMPIRE WILL CLEAN PITCHER’S PLATE AFTER THE 3RD OUT (Point your seat to center field when cleaning pitcher’s plate / to outfield fence for bases…) BASE UMPIRE WILL NEVER HAVE A CATCH/ NO CATCH CALL unless the Exception is used… Final Play / Game Ending Play 2 Outs Multiple Runners It leaves the Plate Umpire with all calls at all bases One Umpire System is least accurate and least effective
29
BASE UMPIRE F4 DOUBLE PLAY: Take 1-2 steps toward 2B
See ball released w control NEVER RUN DIRECTLY AT 1B Flat angle… blocks view Get as close as possible to 1B/ “Set” / Don’t Make Call “on the run” Sell ‘em Out/ Sell ‘em Safe Signal BASE UMPIRE F4

Veteran vs. Rookie Umpire: Your knowledge of the sport of Softball will always be beneficial… Move like an “athlete” Common Sense is vital to your survival Good first impression/ Pride in your uniform and appearance Credibility and Respect Preventive Umpiring Skills Timing / Correct Signals / Positioning Studying The Rules / Applying The Intent of the Rules to Game Situations Are You Approachable… Look Coach In The Eye… Listen… Be Concise w explanation… In my judgment… This is what I saw… (Sometimes must walk away… Umpire does not have to have the last word…)… Keep a good pace to the game
