Processes the body must do to keep us alive Maintaining boundaries – the internal (inside) environment remains distinct (different) from the external (outside) Cellular level – by plasma/cell membranes Organismal level – by the skin Movement – locomotion (move from point A to Point B), propulsion (peristalsis: move food), and contractility (muscles shorten) Responsiveness – ability to sense changes in the environment and respond to them Digestion – breakdown of ingested foodstuffs Homework 8/12 Continued on next slide

Necessary Life Functions
Metabolism – all the chemical reactions that occur in the body Excretion – removes wastes from the body Reproduction – creating new life on the cellular and organismal levels Cellular – a cell divides and produces two identical daughter cells Organismal – sperm and egg unite to make a whole new person Growth – increase in size of a body part or of our whole body
