What is the Capability Maturity Model?
A proven industry framework to improve product quality and development efficiency for both hardware and software Describes the maturity of an IT organization in 5, same as predecessor CMM Emphasis on business needs, integration and institutionalization CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) is a proven industry framework to improve product quality and development efficiency for both hardware and software - Sponsored by US Department of Defence in cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University and the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) - Many companies have been involved in CMMI definition such as Motorola and Ericsson - CMMI has been established as a model to improve business results

CMMI – 5 Maturity Levels Prescriptive Analytics Process performance continually improved through incremental and innovative technological improvements. Level 5 Optimizing Advisory Conditions Level 4 Quantitatively Managed Processes are controlled using statistical and other quantitative techniques. Process Maturity Benchmarks Baselines Level 3 Processes are well characterized and understood. Processes, standards, procedures, tools, etc. are defined at the organizational (Organization X ) level. Proactive. Defined Dashboard Level 2 Managed Processes are planned, documented, performed, monitored, and controlled at the project level. Often reactive. MDO Methodology | Monitor. Diagnose. Optimize.
Go from reactive database firefighter to proactive performance tuner and trusted advisor. O Proactive D Optimize This is the framework we use at S1 when we advise our customers on how to go from a reactive to proactive state of database management. If you’re a consultant or have your own remote DBA service, this should be familiar to you. You'll see on this continuum we have Reactive on the far left and Proactive on the far right. Most data pros are somewhere on the left before starting to use SentryOne. Reactive “Days full of hope and fear” When you're in a reactive state - DBAs are coming into work and have days "full of hope and fear". If there is a problem, by the time I know about it, “there are multiple people who cant work, medical records that can’t be accessed, and the business is losing time and money”. By the time the problem reaches our data pros, it’s completely overwhelming. Businesses stuck in reactive mode struggle to retain their DBAs who can’t move forward in their careers and can’t affect change in the organization The goal is to move your clients to that proactive state. – so you are monitoring the info they need and getting them to a proactive state This is the crux of a remote DBA service. Behaviors Optimizing Quantitatively Managed Defined Managed Initial
Maturity Level Process Characteristics Behaviors Focus on "fire prevention"; Optimizing Focus is on continuous quantitative improvement improvement anticipated and desired, and impacts assessed. Quantitatively Managed Process is measured and controlled Greater sense of teamwork and inter- dependencies Reliance on defined process. People understand, support and follow the process. Defined Process is characterized for the organization and is proactive Managed Process is characterized for projects and is often reactive Over reliance on experience of good people – when they go, the process goes. “Individual Heroics.” Process is unpredictable, poorly controlled, and reactive Focus on "fire fighting"; Initial effectiveness low – frustration high.
