Bespoke skin treatment Powered by Face Mapping® Time-tailored
Unique modular approach Traditionally, spas, salons and skin treatment centers provide clients with a variety of preconceived treatments on a menu and ask clients to select what they think is best. But this experience can leave some clients feeling unsure ("Did I select the right treatment?") and unfulfilled ("That wasn't what I expected it to be!"). In today's hyper-personalized world, clients expect more than a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all skin treatment. They want you—the professional—to craft a treatment just for them. Whether you have busy, shop-and-go clients or clients who crave rest and relaxation, Dermalogica's ProSkin 30 and ProSkin 60 treatments allow you to design the utmost bespoke experience—a customized treatment built around your clients' unique lifestyles, schedules and skin concerns. Available in 30-minute or 60-minute form, these time-tailored treatments are truly revolutionary because they are customized at every step by you, based on your client's Face Mapping® results. Using a unique modular approach driven by your knowledge and expertise, ProSkin 30 and ProSkin 60 treatments place the power in your hands to change how clients value and care for their skin. Link: Let’s take a look at the modules.

touch therapy As a professional skin therapist, it is up to you to design and build the perfect ProSkin treatment for your client. To help you, we developed modules that serve as your “building blocks” for each treatment. The titles of each module indicate the action taken during this step of the protocol. Think of each module as a 10-minute phase (or step) of the treatment. You can mix and match modules according to your client’s needs, and further customize them with a variety of modalities, products and powered-up options. We’ll expand upon this in a moment, but first let’s review the benefits of the ProSkin 30 and ProSkin 60 treatment. extractions dermal layering

a sensorial experience
Undergraduate Instructor: talk about how this pertains to your school environment and guest areas. Ask a few students about their own personal experiences when they received services in a spa or salon. Let’s discuss some of the things you can do to help create a the perfect client experience: Before you begin a treatment, there are a number of things you can do to ensure your client is as comfortable and receptive as possible. From the moment that your client books their appointment until they leave the treatment center, the professional skin therapist plays an integral part in the outcome of the overall client experience. Using insights we’ve learned about our client through Face Mapping® and consultation, we can tailor the experience for each of their five senses. Heightening your client’s senses will allow the treatment to be a more memorable experience – like no other treatment they’ve had before! Let’s look at some examples from each element: Sight As our most dominant sense, sight can really influence our perception of the service. Take care with what your client sees. Be sure to use warm light in your treatment room or space. Warm light naturally relaxes and comforts people, encouraging them to wind down. Sound Customizing your client’s music can also help further strengthen their emotional connection to the treatment. When people listen to music, multiple areas of the brain are activated including those associated with movement, attention and memory. Unwelcome noise can jar the senses and negatively impact the experience. Ask your clients what kind of music they would like to listen to during their treatment. Listening to favorable music can help stimulate the release of dopamine, which allows for deeper pleasure and relaxation. Touch Check in with your clients about the room’s temperature to ensure that they feel comfortable. If necessary, adjust your thermostat or any linens to accommodate. A memory foam pillow and bolster, along with a temperature-controlled bed, can also provide a sense of relaxation and security. Make sure your linens feel soft, clean and luxurious against the skin, not scratchy or stiff. Hot stones are therapeutic and great to add during a Touch Therapy. Warm steam towels help enhance skin treatments and remove product. As an additional nice touch, cleanse the client’s hands and arms with a warm steam towel customized with Calming Botanical Mixer before wrapping client in sheet. Smell Favorable aromas can initiate happiness and link clients to pleasant memories, so be aware of smells that the client indicates are unfavorable. Keep air circulating and avoid stuffy rooms. Diffusers may enhance the room appeal. Ask your client if he or she would enjoy a particular essential oil aroma during their treatment. Favorable aromas can initiate happiness and link clients to pleasant memories. Taste At the end of your client’s treatment, prepare a warm drink of their choice as they finish getting dressed. Studies show that 82 percent of people who are served a warm drink associate the gesture with warmth of character and competence. Optional activity: Sensorial experience ideas Directions: 5 minutes Have students brainstorm and share ideas of other ways to enhance the sensorial experience. first impressions Warm and inviting atmosphere
Supplies and equipment in working order Clean and safe environment First impressions are everything! Make a wonderful first impression by setting up your treatment room according to your highest standards. Our goal here while you are learning, will be to create and maintain this environment for our clients and ourselves. This involves checking that all equipment and supplies are in working order as well as having clean laundry and stocked dry goods, etc. We will learn proper set up and positioning of our bed/station, as well as draping of the client. This will be one of the first things you will learn, practicing with different partners so that you get the full range of positioning and will have all worked on each-other to help you gain the confidence you need. Discuss the school rules, protocols, and guidelines for maintaining a clean and safe environment. You may also wish to briefly discuss infection control and how it pertains to maintaining your treatment space. Link: Now that we know how to set ourselves up for success, let’s take a look at the steps of the treatment.
13
consultation Determine most appropriate treatment
Insight into our client’s needs and concerns Undergraduate Instructor: ask the students if they’ve ever had a thorough consultation prior to receiving a skin treatment. Discuss. Every great treatment starts with a thorough consultation. A consultation is a discovery of client skincare needs and history in addition to possible contraindications to service. Ideally, clients should arrive 15 minutes early for their first visit to allow for adequate time to review information. Subsequent visits – 5 minutes should be sufficient time to review client information from previous visit. When a thorough consultation is performed before a treatment, it provides an opportunity to help the client understand that we are focusing on their skin’s health vs. it being just a treat! Ultimately, it ensures respect for the skin therapist, through the education and insight they can provide about the client’s skin condition. Link: Let’s take a closer look at the Dermalogica Consultation Card.
14
dermalogica consultation card
Establishes a high level of professionalism Provides a greater understanding of the client’s skin health and skin condition Safety for the client, skin therapist and the business A consultation is a discovery of client skincare needs and history in addition to possible contraindications to service. It is recommended that each consultation is completed approximately 15 minutes prior to the treatment. Go over the importance of the professional consultation system, extra details to mention are: The in-depth consultation: Will reveal any contraindications to your planned course of treatment, and also give you a glimpse into the client’s current regimen and expectations of your services. Keeping your consultation cards up-to-date will not only allow you to chart your clients’ progress, but will also be a vital record of whether or not each client has accurately disclosed related medical conditions (normally the most neglected part of the treatment). It is a priority in order to ensure that the client is happy with their treatment and you have addressed their concerns. Ensures that treatments are carried out safely. They must sign the card – this is the therapist’s professional protection. This is a major priority due to the litigious action that is taken by clients who may have adverse effects to their skin post treatment. It helps to establish what was used, for how long and may protect the business or therapist if the client did not reveal something about their health prior to treatment. Produces a positive response from the client as they are being heard and are having your personal attention. Makes the client focus on the treatment: skin health vs. a treat! Respect for the skin therapist, through the education and insight they can provide about the client’s skin condition. Link: Once we have completed the client consultation we are ready to begin.
15
How will you decide which treatment and products are right for your client’s skin? This is one of the most important decisions you as a therapist will make during each treatment. Link: To aid in that decision, we must first prepare the skin. Undergraduate Instructor: ask the students to name the different skin types that they know. Write them on the board and have each student list their name under which skin type they think they have. how will I know?
16
double cleanse module Dermalogica uses a double cleanse technique which you all will be learning. This allows us to get a truly clean skin in order to perform a thorough skin analysis. Every treatment begins with the Double Cleanse Module, which involves first cleansing the skin with PreCleanse to remove oil based debris from the skin, followed by Face Mapping® to confirm additional products and modalities, and to choose which modules you will incorporate into the treatment. You finish by cleansing with your chosen second Dermalogica cleanser to address your client’s skin concerns. Once you complete this module, you can move on to the other module(s) you’ve selected for your client’s bespoke treatment. Undergraduate Instructor: a fun activity for the end of the day is to have students pair up with one another and “practice” Face Mapping® on each-other. This is an opportunity to get the students comfortable speaking with a client and touching the skin up close and personal – something that most of them are probably unfamiliar with and this is a great place to start!
17
resurfacing module The purpose of exfoliation in the professional treatment is to remove dead cells and prepare the skin for treating specific underlying conditions – with a few gentle grains or enzymes we may un-cap a clogged pore, smooth the skin’s texture, and loosen dead skin cells which may dull the complexion. The choice of professional exfoliant will depend on the client consultation and what we see on the skin during Face Mapping®. Resurfacing Module The name “Resurfacing” exudes a higher level and type of exfoliation. It also gives this step a more professional feel versus “exfoliating” at home. This 10-minute module includes product application, modality options and removal. This module is fantastic to help with multiple skin concerns – unless your client is contraindicated to resurfacing. Professional exfoliation is a key component to helping clients achieve their skin care goals as it helps with concerns of uneven skin tone, rough texture and dull/lackluster skin. Link: Once any dead surface cells have been removed, the skin is primed and ready for deep cleansing and penetration of beneficial ingredients.
18
extractions module One method the professional skin therapist uses for deep cleansing is extractions. What do we mean by extractions? Performing extractions is a technique used to express or remove excess sebum from the follicle. First you will need to decide what we can and cannot effectively extract on the skin. From there, we must determine how to prepare the skin for extractions, as well as determine how much time to spend on this portion of the treatment. To get the best professional result you will learn a method known as desincrustation, as well as the International Dermal Institute extraction technique that does not injure the skin in the process. Extractions module If you see congestion and comedones (non-inflamed lesions) on your client’s skin, you may want to add Extractions. Your client may have even requested them! You can perform these manually, or with modalities, to hygienically and safely clear pores of impactions and to help prevent future breakouts. This module allows enough time for desincrustation and extractions; and is laid out with steps for prep, extract and post. Link: Once we have removed any debris from the follicle we must decide if massage is best suited for our client’s skincare needs.
19
touch therapy module A massage is given after the skin has been thoroughly cleansed and treated. We must decide between incorporating a traditional European style massage which will stimulate blood flow and oil production, or an acupressure style massage which is more suited for a reactive or sensitive skin. Discuss with students: What do you think would be the deciding factor in choosing the massage most suited for your client? Touch Therapy module One of the most exciting and memorable parts of a skin treatment is the massage, which can help lower stress, stimulate lymph flow, improve circulation and alleviate pain. Dermalogica’s exclusive Touch Therapy techniques allow you to incorporate massage, aromatherapy, acupressure and lymphatic drainage to help eliminate toxins and relax tissues in the skin. Link: After the massage, it’s time to treat the skins underlying conditions.
20
deep treatment module To focus on targeting a client’s main skin concern or underlying conditions you have options. Incorporating a masque can offer many benefits – they can be used to aid in hydrating, soothing and healing, or absorbing oil and refining the texture of the skin. You also have the option of applying a serum under the masque to seal in and help penetrate the ingredients. One method to help penetrate ingredients further into the skin is through the use of electricity if your client is not contraindicated. We will be learning about various different modalities that will help you achieve these results. Deep Treatment module Deep Treatment explains exactly what the skin is receiving during this module: products that deeply penetrate and work within the skin for amazing results. This portion of your treatment should be dedicated to intensively targeting your client’s specific skin concerns and conditions, which can range from dehydration and sensitivity to signs of premature aging and acne. Now that the skin has been thoroughly cleansed and prepped, it is ready to allow for optimal penetration of whichever targeted treatment you choose to apply. This can consist of masques, serums and modalities. Link: After full removal of the masque, it’s time to tone and protect the skin before the treatment is complete.
21
dermal layering module
What do we mean by “tone”? Are you familiar with astringents? They are typically alcohol based solutions which help to remove residue left behind after cleansing. When we tone the skin, we use solutions that don’t contain any alcohol – rather they help to hydrate and soothe the skin, and allow serums and moisturizers to absorb more efficiently. You can also tone the skin with the use of machines – the spray toner on your esty machine can be filled with a customizable blend, or you can use the Dr. Lucas sprayer to apply a very fine mist of plant extracts, herbal teas, fresheners or astringents. The mist can be used warm to increase the blood flow to the skin’s surface, or cool to calm a reactive skin. Dermal Layering Module Every treatment should end with this module, which prepares your client to leave with their healthiest-looking skin and our signature “Dermalogica glow.” Now is the time to apply and layer any finishing products that should remain on your client’s skin for the rest of the day. This includes products you plan to prescribe or sample to your client as part of their Face Mapping and take-home Skin Fitness Plan. Ideally you will spend about 5 minutes to apply finishing products and then 5 minutes to perform the hot towel on the back and close the treatment with the client. Link: The hands-on portion of the treatment is now complete. Before our clients leave, we must go over our findings from their Face Mapping® and review the Skin Fitness Plan with our client. dermal layering module

prescribe home care and re-book
Undergraduate Instructor: Explain how important it is to educate the client in an efficient manner, answering client concerns and focusing on getting results. The emerging therapist has a lot of competition, the most valuable tool we have is the ability to communicate and connect with our clients. The following slide contains a sample protocol for a ProSkin 60 treatment. This will bring everything together to showcase what the students will be learning and create excitement for what's to come. Link: Let’s take a look at a ProSkin 60 treatment in action… prescribe home care and re-book

Undergraduate Instructor: have the treatment room set up and ask that the client fill out the Dermalogica Consultation Card prior to the demonstration. Consultation – Discuss key questions with the group, and any possible contraindications to service. Showcase how to determine what the key problems/concerns are and any specific requirements to be addressed during the treatment. Double Cleanse Module Cleanse the eyes and lips with PreCleanse on damp cotton Perform the first cleanse with PreCleanse. Follow the IDI cleanse routine, working rhythmically across face and neck. As you add water, discuss emulsification of PreCleanse. Remove with sponges. Perform Face Mapping® – Emphasize the importance of skin analysis for homecare recommendations. Use magnifying lamp and discuss what you see. Be thorough and go through the client’s skin pointing out different discoveries and the link to product regimen, lifestyle. Reiterate that in the treatment room this takes a few minutes, but is vital to the treatment and retailing aspect of the client experience. Perform second cleanse with prescribed cleanser according to the clients skin type/conditions. Remove all product with sponges and warm water. Resurfacing Module Mix Daily Microfoliant® into a loose foam in a jelly cup and massage lightly onto the skin for 2 minutes under steam. Remove with steam towel customized with Calming Botanical Mixer. Touch Therapy Module Perform either the IDI European massage or Dermalogica Pressure Point massage based on client’s skin and goals. Apply client appropriate additive and massage medium of choice. Explain some of the benefits of massage along with what essential oils you are using and why. Remove with steam towel customized with Calming Botanical Mixer. Deep Treatment Module Apply an almond sized amount of the appropriate IonActiveTM Serum for model’s skin. Follow with prescribed professional masque for model’s skin and share the benefits of this. Place eye pillow over client’s eye area. Be sure to mention to never leave client unattended while the masque is on. Remove masque with warm steam towel and sponges. Dermal Layering Module Spritz Multi-Active Toner over face, neck and chest Apply prescribed eye treatment Apply client appropriate moisturizer over face, neck and chest Finish treatment with application of sunscreen (optional application of primer) Complete Skin Fitness Plan and discuss homecare recommendations with the client Re-booking – demonstrate rebooking conversation and discuss timelines with students Link: Now that you understand the steps of a professional skin treatment, let’s start reviewing and practicing the beginning steps. demonstration

room preparation A look behind the scenes Gathering all tools Product
Linens Machines Let’s start by taking a look at what we can do to prepare prior to the client’s arrival. The flow of the skin treatment largely depends on how organized our treatment room is. Prepare yourself for success by going through a mental check list each time you set up for your treatment. Do I have all the implements I will need? These include brushes, bowls and jelly cups. Dry goods including cotton, bonnet, gloves, gauze etc. should be easily accessible and fully stocked. It’s important to have all necessary supplies available so you don’t have to leave your client while they are on the treatment bed. Instructors go over your schools protocol for where all these items are to be kept on the student stations. It’s also great to give a quick tour of the treatment room at the end of this module to point out where all of these items are kept. Remind students the importance of keeping their treatment area clean as this will give a smooth flow to the treatment, and will leave a good first impression on the client. Product – are all of my products easily accessible and clean? You don’t want to waste time in the treatment looking for a product. Optional to create a laminated “tray diagram” so all products are put back in the corresponding locations on the trolley. It’s also a good idea to get in the habit of checking that all of your products are full prior to beginning a treatment. There’s nothing more frustrating than not having the right product for the client. Linens – all linens must be freshly laundered with no visible stains. Check that you have an ample supply of towels, sheets, and headbands behind your treatment station to replenish through out the day. Robe/gown may be placed on bed prior to client’s arrival. Machines – go through all modalities available on your machines and test to ensure everything is working. This includes checking all attachments (brushes, vacuum, galvanic, high frequency, steam, mag lamp). This will vary depending on what is available at your learning center. You may also want to check your treatment bed to ensure you know the ins and outs of adjusting it prior to assisting your client onto the bed. Link: We’ll go over how to set up your SMA (sanitary maintenance area) at the beginning of each treatment.
25
protecting your client and yourself is your primary responsibility
To maintain a clean and safe working environment is one of our primary responsibilities. Even the way we set up our work area and dispense products will be done in the most sanitary methods. We aim to go above and beyond what is required by the Rules and Regulations of the state. Above is just one example of what we do in our work area. SMA stands for sanitary maintenance area. The purpose of an SMA is to create a protective barrier between clean and sanitized items/implements to be used on a client and the surface on which they are arranged. This is to prevent contamination of materials as well as the spread of infectious diseases. Your basic SMA setup includes the following: Paper towel/towel placed on surface of trolley/back bar to create a sanitary barrier – all items coming into contact with the client’s skin will be placed on this (as pictured on the slide) Client draping supplies (headband, bonnet) Cleansing and treatment supplies (bowls for water, sponges, jelly cups and brushes, dry goods and product) Link: Now that our treatment area is set up, let’s go over how to greet our client and learn about a quick and easy draping method.
26
greeting and draping the client
Have they been here before? How do I make them feel welcome and at ease? Setting up your treatment bed From the moment our client walks through the door, we want to do our best to make them feel comfortable and at ease. Greeting the client Before greeting your client, quickly look over their Dermalogica Consultation Card. If your client has been here before, be sure to welcome them back. When you greet your client you want to appear confident and professional. Make eye contact and reach for their hand to welcome them. Offer skin friendly refreshments if available (water, herbal tea, juice) Ask if they would like to use the restroom before you begin Direct the client to the changing area and go over with them step by step how you would like them to change. Be specific. Demonstrate when discussing how you would like them to put on the gown/robe. Example: under the arms like a towel, etc. Trust me…this will save everyone the embarrassment of having a client walk out in a skirt, turban, or better yet a superhero cape – it happens!!
