TKAM Chapter 16, 17, 18, and 19

Chapter 16, question 1 and 2 1. How did Jem's behaviour toward Scout show his growing maturity? Jem knew that Scout was upset, so he took her into his room to sleep. He tried to reassure her that it would all be over soon. 2. Explain the reference to William Jennings Bryan. This is an allusion to a man who was a lawyer and political leader who was considered by many to be the best American orator ever. He had strong liberal beliefs and supported many liberal causes and was instrumental in creating reform in many areas such as women's suffrage.

Chapter 16, question 3 and 4 3. Miss Maudie compared the atmosphere surrounding the trial to a Roman carnival. Why? Gladiators fighting to the death was considered to be a form of entertainment for the ancient Romans. Miss Maudie felt that it was wrong and inappropriate to make the trial into a gala event, especially since it was likely to end in the death of a man. 4. Miss Maudie used sarcasm when asking Miss Stephanie about going to the courthouse. Explain why. Miss Maudie uses irony or mockery because Miss Stephanie acted like she knew everything about the case, when in fact her information didn't come from credible sources; it came from gossip and rumours that she had heard. If she really did know all the information first-hand, she could have been called as a witness which is suggested when Miss Maudie says, " 'Better be careful he doesn't hand you a subpoena' ".

Chapter 16, question 5 and 6 5. Scout overheard a conversation among the members of the Idlers' Club. What did she learn that put a "different light on things"? Why did this confuse her? She learned that the court had appointed Atticus to defend Tom Robinson. She is upset because if she had known this, she would have used this information to defend Atticus since her interpretation is that he really didn't have a choice in the matter. Also, since the community knows that Atticus was a court appointed lawyer, it is hard for Scout to understand why everyone is so upset with him. 6. With whom did Scout, Jem, and Dill view the court proceedings? They sat with Reverend Sykes in the balcony area.

Chapter 17 and 18 The trial begins
Mayella Ewell’s injuries consist of bruising around her head, arms, and a black right eye Atticus attempts to discredit Mayella by asking her some simple personal questions that she appears to have difficulty answering suggesting she may not tell the truth Tom clearly cannot use his left arm; it is basically not functional, which suggests that it would have been difficult, if not impossible for Tom to have held Mayella down with one arm and beaten her as severely as she had been beaten Mr. Ewell is asked to sign his name to show that he is left-handed suggesting it is more likely that he is responsible for what happened to Mayella

Chapter 19, question 1 and 2 Characterize Tom Robinson from what you learned in this chapter. Tom is 25 years old. He is kind and compassionate. Since he knows that Mayella does not get much help from anyone at home, he helps her do her chores. He also knows the family is poor, so he doesn’t accept money for the work he does. He has been in trouble with the law before, and was sentenced to 30 days for having a fight with another man. 2. What does Scout mean by the following: “She [Mayella] was even lonelier than Boo Radley”? Scout means that Mayella does not seem to belong anywhere. She doesn’t even know the meaning of the word “friends.” When Atticus is polite to her, she thinks he’s making fun of her. It seems like Tom was one of the few people who is nice to her.

Chapter 19, question 3 and 4 3. How does Tom’s testimony about the evening of November 21st differ from Mayella’s? Mayella says she asked Tom to help her chop up an old closet/wardrobe. She says she may have asked him to help her before, but she never asked him to come inside the house before that day. She says Tom went behind her, and when she turned around, choked her. She fought, but he hit her repeatedly and “took advantage” of her. Her father came in and asked who did this to her, and then she fainted. When she awoke, the sheriff was there. 4. Atticus was not the only white man to stand up for Tom. Who else spoke out on Tom’s behalf? Link Deas, Tom’s employer, has an outburst and clearly defends Tom saying that Tom’s never given him any trouble.

Chapter 19, question 5 and 6 5. Why does Tom regret his explanation of why he helped Mayella? Tom says that he felt sorry for Mayella. The prejudiced white community resent a black man who says he feels sorry for someone who is white, no matter what the circumstances are. 6. How does Dill show his sensitivity? He becomes upset and cries because of the disrespectful way Mr. Gilmer speaks to Tom (he calls him “boy”), and that what is happening is unjust. When Scout says that “[Tom’s] just a Negro,” Dill says it doesn’t matter, and that no one has the right to speak to Tom that way.
