Grammatical Case A case is a special grammatical category whose value reflects the grammatical function performed by a noun, pronoun, adjective, participle or numeral in a phrase, clause or sentence.

Types of cases Nominative: Subject of a finite verb
Accusative: Direct object of a transitive verb Dative: Indirect object of the verb Genitive: Possessor of a noun Instrumental: Object used in performing action Locative: Indicates a location Ablative: Indicates movement away from something Vocative: Refers to the addresse

Case hierarchy Nominative > Accusative or Ergative > Genitive > Dative > Locative > Ablative > Instrumental > Vocative > Others
