2 The Roaring 20’s The Roaring Twenties was a nickname for the 1920s.
It was a hopeful and prosperous time because the economy and stock market were doing very well. People were spending money on entertainment and goods, such as automobiles. People thought these amazing times would last forever. © Erin Kathryn 2018

3 World War I The United States was feeling very optimistic because World War I had just ended in 1918. The United States had gained a lot of global power because they were on the winning side of the war. There was a lot of confidence in the U.S government and the armed forces. © Erin Kathryn 2018

4 Booming Economy Many industries grew very quickly in the 1920s.
As a results, products, such as automobiles, radios, and phonographs, lowered their prices. This made it possible for families of average incomes be able to afford them. © Erin Kathryn 2018

5 Booming Economy For the first time, you could also buy items on credit, or a loan. Many people used credit to buy more expensive items, like cars. Everyone wanted to own two things: a car and a radio. © Erin Kathryn 2018

6 Henry Ford Henry Ford was an American automobile manufacturer and the founder of Ford Motor Company. He revolutionized mass consumption and production during the 1920s by using an assembly line to produce the Ford Model T at an affordable cost. Henry Ford also paid his workers at higher than normal wages. © Erin Kathryn 2018

7 Charles Lindbergh Charles Lindbergh made history in the 1920s by flying nonstop from New York to Paris solo. In 1927, Lindbergh flew his plane, the Spirit of St. Louis, 33 ½ hours to Paris using only the stars and a compass to navigate. After completing the trip, Lindbergh became very famous and was considered a hero. © Erin Kathryn 2018

8 Babe Ruth Babe Ruth was a successful baseball player in the 1920s.
He was a pitcher and even better hitter for the Red Sox before being bought by the New York Yankees. He played for the Yankees for 15 years and helped them win 4 World Series titles. Babe Ruth led the league in home runs almost every year. © Erin Kathryn 2018

9 The Jazz Age The Roaring 20s is also sometimes referred to as the “Age of Jazz.” Jazz music became very popular during this time. People would listen to it on the radio or live in dance halls. People loved to go out dancing as a form of entertainment. © Erin Kathryn 2018

10 Louis Armstrong Louis Armstrong was a very popular jazz musician during the Age of Jazz. He was a fantastic horn player, who sang later in his career, too. Louis Armstrong recorded a number of hit songs and was known for making “scat” style singing popular. Scatting is making up words to a song as you go. © Erin Kathryn 2018

11 Harlem Renaissance The Harlem Renaissance was a period of time in the 1920s when African American artists, authors, and musicians flourished. Many African Americans had migrated north to the city for work opportunities and a better life. As a result, Harlem, in New York City, became the home of the movement. Harlem was a cultural center buzzing with new ideas and diversity. © Erin Kathryn 2018

12 Langston Hughes Langston Hughes was an African American author, who was an important figure during the Harlem Renaissance. He wrote more than 60 books during his writing career, including poems, novels, plays, children's poetry, musicals and autobiographies. He loved to sit in jazz clubs and listen to jazz music while he wrote. He was a leader during the 1920s and devoted his life to writing about the Black experience in the United States. © Erin Kathryn 2018

13 Women’s Rights The 1920s was a profound time for women’s rights.
In 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified. This gave women the right to vote. Women continued the jobs they had taken on during World War I. Some women rebelled by wearing shorter skirts, short hair, listening to jazz music, and showing their independence. They were called flappers. © Erin Kathryn 2018

14 Changes in Culture After the inventions of the radio, movies, and the ability to mass produce goods, the culture of the United States began to change in the 1920s. People across the entire country were listening to the same music, watching the same movies, and buying many of the same goods. © Erin Kathryn 2018

15 Stock Market Crash With the economy doing so well, many people bought goods on credit, or a loan that you pay back over time. The overall debt of the country grew quickly. Stocks became worth more than their actual value. On October 29, 1929, the stock market crashed. This day is referred to as Black Tuesday. This signaled the beginning of the Great Depression. © Erin Kathryn 2018
