Body Thesis Statements
HOMS Outline

What’s a bts? A Body Thesis Statement is like a thesis statement, but more specific. You can’t just throw all your pieces of evidence in a random order, so you need to decide on a sense of organization for your essay. You can think of a BTS as a subthesis, like a subtopic. Each BTS has its own section of the essay. For now, each section will be a paragraph long.

Fake thesis example Fake Thesis: In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros uses symbolism to represent the conflicts in Esperanza’s life, revealing the message that friendship hurts people and leads to sadness. Fake BTS 1: Cisneros uses the symbol of the watermelon in the vignette “The Watermelons” to represent a friendship that causes pain. Fake BTS 2: The symbol of the bridge represents Esperanza’s connection to her evil friends and shows their negative affect on her.

WAYS TO DIVIDE You can divide your evidence into BTSs by…
Identifying different symbols and having one paragraph for each. Identifying different types of figurative language, and having one paragraph for each. Focusing on one vignette for each BTS. Moving chronologically through the text. (This does not work well for HOMS, but it works well in novels.)

How many? For this outline, which is very formulaic, you should have 2 or 3 BTSs. You are required to have 6 pieces of evidence, minimum.
