3 Prime Factorization Method
When a number is expressed as a product of its factors we say that the number has been factorized. When these factors are only prime numbers we call this method as Prime Factorization Method. Check the number 28 It uses a visual presentation called a factor tree. As we add more branches, we will see that this visual representation looks like an upside down tree. 28 14 2 7 Prime Factorization of 28 is = 2 x 2 x 7

4 Recap-Steps to find Prime Factors of a number
Step1: Divide the given number by prime numbers only Step2: Continue dividing till we get only prime numbers Step3: Prime factorization is the product of all prime number (order them from the least to the greatest)

5 Example 1: Express 195 as a product of its prime factors
195 can be written as 3  something... List the first few prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19... 3 65 65 can be written as 5  something... 5 13 13 is a prime number, so stop the process Prime factorization is the product of multiplying it’s prime factors. 195 = 3  5  13 This is called a factor tree. All the red digits are prime factors of 195. Remember: This is not the only possible factor tree, but any factor tree should give the same end result!

6 Example 2: Express 180 as a product of its prime factors
180 is an even number so can be written as 2  something... List the first few prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19... 180 90 can be written as 2  something... 90 2 45 can be written as 3  something... 2 45 15 can be written as 3  something... 15 3 5 is a prime number, so stop the process 3 5 Prime factorization is the product of multiplying it’s prime factors. 180 = 2  2  3 x 3 x 5 This is called a factor tree. All the red digits are prime factors of 180.

7 Example 3: Express 224 as a product of its prime factors
224 is an even number so can be written as 2  something... List the first few prime numbers: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19... 224 112 is not a prime number, so repeat the process with 2 112 2 56 is not a prime number, so repeat the process with 2 2 56 28 is not a prime number, so repeat the process with 2 28 2 14 is not a prime number, so repeat the process with 2 Prime factorization is the product of multiplying it’s prime factors. 2 14 224 = 2  2  2 x 2 x 2 x 7 7 is a prime number, so stop the process 2 7 This is called a factor tree. All the red digits are prime factors of 224.

8 Try these 1. Express 108 as a product of its prime factors
