1 FLAMMABILITY VS. VOLATILITY
Learning Goal: Understand the relationship of chemical structure to flammability and volatility

2 VOLATILITY Volatility – A measure of the tendency of a substance to vaporize. Vaporize – Convert into a gaseous state. Overcome weak nuclear forces and hydrogen bonds. Vapor Pressure – The force per unit area exerted by vapor in an equilibrium state with surroundings at a given pressure. It increases exponentially with an increase in temperature. Volatile substances Have weak bonds Are close to the liquid/gas phase boundary at room temperature Melting and boiling points are close to each other

3 FLAMMABILITY Flammability – Refers to a material that will ignite at average temperatures.  A volatile substance may have sufficient vapor pressure to form flammable (or even explosive) mixtures with air in low temperatures, so that ignition can occur even without direct contact. Solids and liquids do not ignite, it is the vapor (gas) they release that can ignite The majority of flammable substances contain carbon and hydrogen in their chemical structure

4 Flammable and Volatile?
So: are all flammable substances volatile? YES! And: are all volatile substances flammable? NO! WHY?

5 COMMON SUBSTANCES FLAMMABLE AND VOLATILE Gasoline - C8H18
M.P. = -57 °C B.P. = °C Nail polish remover - C3H6O M.P. = -95 °C B.P. =57 °C Rubbing alcohol - C3H7OH M.P. = -89 °C B.P. =82 °C Butane (lighter fluid) – C4H10 M.P. = -138 °C B.P. = 1 °C

6 COMMON SUBSTANCES VOLATILE NOT FLAMMABLE Water – H2O Chlorine – CL2
M.P. = 0°C B.P.= 100°C Chlorine – CL2 M.P. = °C, B.P. = °C Oxygen – O2 M.P. =  °C B.P. =  °C Soda - H2O, H2CO3, H3PO4, C8H10N4O2, C12H22O11 M.P. = -1°C B.P.= 99°C
