To mock current thinking on the issue To gather support for his own stance on the issue of border security Is satire the most effective way to achieve this purpose?

AUDIENCE? Educated US voters US policy makers/politicians
Is openly mocking these policy makers the most effective way to influence change?

CONTEXT? Recent political discussions promoting the building of a wall and the threat of immigrant terrorists Changes in immigration law, support for undocumented citizens, and perceived impact on US economy Current state of political and economic fear

EXIGENCE? The conversation regarding border security and immigration has become ridiculous, our country’s morals are in question, lives are being hurt Politicians need to act now and act reasonably

SHIFT/DICTION/SATIRE:
HYPERBOLE/MEIOSIS: Ridiculous ideas are exaggerated while plausible solutions are understated. Ex. Destruction of natural resources like trees and oil can be turned into capital which would be wasted on alternative energy SHIFT/DICTION/SATIRE: Most shifts are made explicit through diction, transition words. One shift however is made explicit in that it is absolute…a suggestion that while the argument is a joke, the topic is serious…Satire Ex. “The most foolish of all…” CHOICES?

APPEALS? LOGOS: Factual information, statistical data, and reasoned arguments provided. Points are explained through example and benefit. PATHOS: The argument and reasoning is intended to incite response, to anger the audience in order to force action

TONE? He is unapologetic and confident in his belief
He is accusatory; directly blaming US policy makers for their lack of reason He is concerned and cynical He is jaded by a perceived lack of critical thought He is sarcastic
