The challenges that cities face… racial tension, economic inequities, food disparities, drug abuse, health problems, increasing crime rates etc… Can only be solved by churches mobilizing the body of Christ to show and share the good news of the Gospel. The Gospel changes hearts and minds! REACH 434-Introduction

7 REACH 434-Introduction Introduction:
“If the church took up the responsibility of caring for the poor, of living incarnationally, of participating in the unspeakable gift of giving, our world would look much different from the way it does today. Justice is a stewardship issue, caring for the poor is a stewardship issue, loving our neighbor as we love ourselves is a stewardship issue. We have the resources, but our priorities aren’t there yet.” ― John M. Perkins REACH 434-Introduction

8 REACH 434-Introduction Introduction:
It is a terrible misunderstanding of the Gospel to think that it offers us salvation while relieving us of responsibility for the life of the world, for the sin and sorrow and pain with which our human life and that of our fellow men & women are so deeply interwoven. No one is going to listen to your evangelism unless he sees that it comes out of a fellowship that cares. Too much of our evangelism has not met that test. ~ Lesslie Newbigin REACH 434-Introduction

9 REACH 434-Introduction Introduction: John Perkins:
“God has always wanted the vulnerable in society to be cared for. He never intended for them to languish in poverty, abuse, slavery, homelessness, or other types of devastation. When we care for individuals who are trapped in these ways, when we show them love and help them move toward freedom and wholeness, we participate in bringing a little part of God's Kingdom back into alignment with His greater plan. We do justice and God smiles.” – John Perkins REACH 434-Introduction

Introduction: What is our Goal? Our goal is to see love for God and love for our neighbor transform our city! What is a City Transformation Movement: “City transformation” can be described as the measurable, sustained impact of the power of God through his people in a particular place that restores both individuals and societal structures* towards a kingdom reign.” – Tom White *the 7 domains- Religion/ Family/ Education/ Government/ Media/ Arts & Entertainment/ Business) REACH 434- Guiding Principles:

56 REACH 434- Guiding Principles:
1. AN ORGANIZING PRINCIPLE Show and Share the Gospel An organizing principles is a statement that everyone can agree on and begin working toward. The focus of a church in a community must be to show and share the good news of the Gospel. We show the Gospel by following the teachings of the King in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5-7) and we share the Gospel by proclaiming the facts of the death and resurrection of the King (1 Cor. 15:1-8). In this manner we illustrate and proclaim the coming rule and reign of Jesus. The Elders in the church according to Eph. 4:1-16 are there to equip the members of His body to full maturity so that through the gifts given to them by their King they can become the visible hands, feet and voice of Jesus. REACH 434- Guiding Principles:

57 REACH 434- Guiding Principles:
AN ORGANIZING PRINCIPLE (Show and Share the Gospel) Churches should make it their goal to simultaneously find ways to show and share the love of Jesus. The Gospel of Jesus unites churches across spectrums as it shows and shares the good news. (Missiology defines ecclesiology) SHOW the good news: Identify the desperate needs in your community (hunger, drug abuse, poverty rate, unemployment rate, homelessness, reading comprehension, foster homes, food deserts, gangs…) and then come up with ideas and ways to alleviate and solve the challenges. SHARE the good news: While sacrificing and serving we speak about Jesus who sacrificed and served by giving up His life for all mankind. When churches visibly show and verbally share the Gospel… the love and sacrifice of Jesus becomes visible. It takes on flesh. It is incarnational. REACH 434- Guiding Principles:

2. DEPENDENT PRAYER (Holy Spirit Guidance)- Prayer Quotes: Nothing tends more to cement the hearts of Christians than praying together.  Never do they love one another so well as when they witness the outpouring of each other's hearts in prayer. ~ Charles Finney The Spirit, when He prays through us, or helps us to meet the mighty "ougthness" of right praying, trims our praying down to the will of God.... ~ R.A.Torrey It is possible to move men, through God, by prayer alone.  ~ Hudson Taylor Before we can pray, "Lord, Thy Kingdom come," we must be willing to pray, "My Kingdom go."  ~Alan Redpath “There is nothing that makes us love a person… so much as prayer for them.” – Wm. Law Prayer is not monologue, but dialogue; God's voice is its most essential part.  Listening to God's voice is the secret of the assurance that He will listen to mine.  ~ Andrew Murray Prayer at its highest is a two-way conversation and for me the most important part is listening to God's replies.  ~ Frank C. Laubach The real end of prayer is not so much to get this or that single desire granted, as to put human life into full and joyful conformity with the will of God. -Charles Bent Men may spurn our appeals, reject our message, oppose our arguments, despise our persons, but they are helpless against our prayers. ~ J. Sidlow Baxter Intercessory prayer might be defined as loving our neighbor on our knees. -Charles Bent REACH 434- Guiding Principles:

3. A simple strategy (Touch the Heart/ Educate the Mind/ Train the Hands)- PHILOSOPHY 1. Touch the heart - through meeting needs = serving... food/ clothes/ basic life necessities by partners and volunteers. (Reach 434) 2. Inform the mind- through camping experience and classes = education... life skill classes held in churches/ recreation centers by church members. (Camp Pictures) 3. Train the hands-through relationships = mentoring… Open Table friendships through churches that transform lives and give hope through the Gospel “There is no significant learning without a significant relationship- Dr. James Conner REACH 434- Guiding Principles:

64 REACH 434- Guiding Principles:
4. Pastors who Trust Each Other: (5 C’s of Teamwork?) PRACTICES: Praying and working together to show and share the Gospel to a town/city/ community builds unity. Soldiers are close because they are fighting against one enemy to win battles and ultimately win the war. This requires that churches have a plan to train and equip the members of the Body of Christ to focus on meeting the needs of that said community. This requires that Pastors and Churches agree to work together to mature and mobilize the membership for ministry and mission. A “gospel net” begins to form as the churches and members band together to show and share the Gospel. God met our needs through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. Churches meet the needs of our neighbors through sacrificing our time, our energy, our expertise, our resources and His gifts. As a community sees Pastors and Churches working together: Christ becomes tangible and visible to an unbelieving world and they “will know you are my disciples as they see our love for one another.” REACH 434- Guiding Principles:

PROOF: Central communication platform Central training hub Equipping teams who go to churches Every church has Reach 434 Liaisons Summer Camp Sponsorships 250 Life Skill Classes (50 Churches x 5 classes) Mobilize Every Sunday School Class and Small Group to adopt a mission for outreach Hundreds of church members equipped and engaged throughout the community Church members taught to B.L.E.S.S.! BEGIN praying for them. LISTEN to them. EAT with them. As you pray, listen and eat with your neighbors you look for ways to SERVE them and finally you SHARE about the sacrifice of Jesus. REACH 434- Guiding Principles:

70 REACH 434- Guiding Principles:
7. Training Continued: Eph. 1:23 says the church IS His body… Churches for the most part are INVISIBLE to their community because the members of the Body of Christ don’t know or use the spiritual gifts Christ has given to them to show and share the good news of the Gospel. When we use His gifts of mercy, helps, administration, exhortation, teaching… Jesus becomes visible to the world. We can’t be the hands, feet and voice of Jesus when we aren’t actively exercising His gifts to demonstrate His love to the world where we live. When the gifts are mobilized the church (Body of Christ) becomes visible to the world. When the church is visible the world… the world will not only hear and see us… they will feel our love. The good news of the Gospel is both seen and heard in the context of relationships. REACH 434- Guiding Principles:

73 REACH 434- Guiding Principles:
CONCLUSION: According to a North American Mission Board study 85% of churches in North American have plateaued or are in decline… If a church does not have as its goal (mission) to permeate their city, town, county, community with Good News of the Gospel then the focus (mission) will inevitably go inward toward meeting the needs of its constituents. The result will be ageing out and inescapable death. We must mature and mobilize the membership for ministry and mission to show and share the good news of Jesus… because we are commanded… yes… but also to escape the church death cycle. Be on mission (mature and mobilize the membership for the Great Commission) and experience the energy and vibrancy of new life or experience the selfish, self-absorbed, consumer death cycle. To escape the death cycle for a church or a group of churches showing and sharing the Gospel to the city must become the central organizing principle. Obeying the Great Commission by equipping the saints to do the works of service and become the body of that shows and shares the love of Christ… aligns any church or group of churches to quality for receiving the promise of the Great Commission, “I will be with you!” Dream Quotes- Word Document and Worksheet REACH 434- Guiding Principles:
