Developing a Growth Mindset for Students and Parents
This workshop is a review of what you have already been doing. I will give you the new buzz words for what you have been doing for years.
2
WHAT IS A FIXED OR GROWTH MINDSET?
Fixed Mindset Thinkers live by the following internal messages: *Intelligence and talent are fixed, innate traits. *Talent alone creates success. *When learning something new, either you get it or you don’t. *Effort does not make a difference. The internal message for students with fixed mindsets is “Look Good at all Costs.” This internal message may play out with external behaviors such as heads down on desks or refusal to do work. Students with a fixed mindsets act like they don’t care about school or learning or their teachers. They may resist learning and trying to improve, typically feeling embarrassed when not understanding something.
3
Growth Mindset Thinkers develop the following internal beliefs:
*Most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work- brains and talent are just the starting point. *A love of learning and resilience is essential for great accomplishment. *Effort and determination pay off. The internal message for growth mindset is “Learn at All Costs.” They are not afraid to ask for help, to ask questions or to try again. They are ready and willing to learn the executive functioning, or the initiating and planning skills, they need to succeed. They generally believe they can improve through hard work and trying new learning methods.
4
GROW YOUR BRAIN! YOU DON’T GROW YOUR BRAIN DOING WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW! The brain GROWS when: The material is NEW It works HARD It makes CONNECTION How do you grow your brain? Challenge it! Solve problems! Make mistakes! Practice, practice, and practice some more!

BENEFITS MIND SETS + SKILL SETS = RESULTS
THE RESEARCH SHOWS THE FOLLOWING BENEFITS OF A GROWTH MINDSET: Desire for Learning Increased Motivation Increased Resilience Higher Achievement It is not about telling kids they can do anything. It is about believing that talents and abilities can be developed. Developing abilities means developing strategies. Kathleen Kryza developed a formula for educators to keep in mind and to share with students. MIND SETS + SKILL SETS = RESULTS
7
Promoting Growth Mindset in Students
Mastery and competency- carefully designed lesson strategies that stretch student’s abilities Secondary experiences- one that was created later by someone who did not experience first-hand or participate in the events or conditions you’re researching.
9
PRAISE Praise the process NOT the person
Process praise These problems didn’t give you much of a challenge. Let’s move on to something that will really stretch your brain. I like how you used different strategies to figure out these problems. I appreciate that you cleaned up the art center without being asked. Your effort in learning to paint is apparent in your picture. Your writing shows that you understand the value of word choice.
10
Productive Struggle Teachers and parents must learn to allow student to struggle independently of outside resources before assistance is offered. It is important to provide specific opportunities for productive struggle as students hone their skills for the task placed before them. It should seek to challenge the specific areas where improvement is needed within a student or small group. It should occur organically within challenging activities and assignments It should allow students the gift of time to process his or her thinking. It is a hands-on learning opportunities are good to allow for this
11
BE SPECIFIC PRAISE Specific Praise
You’re putting awesome effort in on this fraction assignment. Good work writing a detailed essay. Well done on your dance recital. I can see that you’ve practiced a lot. Great strategy, that took some creative problem solving.
12
Perserverance Angela Duckworth’s Grit:The Power of Passion and Perseverance Grit- her definition- passion and perseverance for long term goals. It is the greatest predictor of graduation rates.
13
Duckworth’s Parent Quadrant
14
Growing GRIT from the Inside Out
Interest- What are you truly interested in? Interests develop into your passions. Practice Practice-Improvement only comes from doing deliberate action. In doing deliberate action you do not focus on what you do well, you focus on what you don’t do well, getting better with time. You only get better by practicing what you are not good at. Purpose-is the intention to contribute to the wellbeing of others. The mature passion of gritty people depends on both interest and purpose Hope-It rests on the expectation that our own efforts can improve our future.
15
Growth Mindset and its link to Social-Emotional Learning, SEL
SEL by definition is the process for learning essential life skills such as decision making, problem solving, effective communication, empathy, perseverance and coping. CASEL- Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning, - is a worldwide organization devoted to using its resources to promote the integrated academic, social and emotional learning of all students from preschool through twelfth grade. Social and emotional learning (SEL) enhances students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges. Like many similar frameworks, CASEL’s integrated framework promotes intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive competence. There are five core competencies that can be taught in many ways across many settings. Many educators and researchers are also exploring how best to assess these competencies.
