1 Inclined Planes

2 What is an Inclined Plane?
An inclined plane is a type of simple machine. An inclined plane is a large and flat object that is tilted so that one end is higher than the other.

3 Real World Applications of Inclined Planes
Hadley Canal in Massachusetts used Inclined Plane engineering around 1800’s to raise and lower boats over Great Falls

4 Background Information
The normal force is always perpendicular to the inclined surface The gravitational force (WEIGHT) is always in downward direction

5 Inclined Planes Θ Θ 90˚ - Θ Θ

6 Solving for the Forces

8 What is the net force for the Inclined Plane diagram to the right?
Find the net force and solve for other unknowns including acceleration and µ What is the net force for the Inclined Plane diagram to the right?

9 Solving for the Forces Using Trigonometry
Determine the net force and acceleration of the roller coaster cars. Assume a negligible effect of friction and air resistance.

10 An 18 kg box is released on a frictionless 33.0 degrees inclined plane.
Draw the diagram, show and label the forces. What is the value of the weight, normal force, and parallel force? How fast will the object accelerate down the incline?

11 The free-body diagram below shows the forces acting upon a 100 kg crate that is sliding down an inclined plane. The plane is inclined at an angle of 30 degrees. The coefficient of friction between the crate and the incline is 0.3. Determine the net force and acceleration of the crate.
