4 UW Graduate School: Doctoral Degree Requirements
Coursework Requirements: A minimum of 90 credits must be completed (a qualifying master’s degree from another institution can substitute for 30 of these required credit hours). A minimum of 60 credits must be completed at the University of Washington. Before the General Exams: At least 18 credits of UW course work at the 500 level and above must be completed prior to the General Examination. At least 18 numerically graded UW credits of approved 400 and all 500 level courses must be completed prior to the General Examination. Completion of 60 credits prior to scheduling the General Examination (which may include 30 credits represented by a qualifying master’s degree).

5 UW Graduate School: Doctoral Degree Requirements
Dissertation Credits: A minimum of 27 dissertation credits over a period of at least three quarters must be completed. With the exception of summer, students should only enroll in 10 dissertation credits (800) per quarter. Additional credits will also come from additional courses, dissertation credits, independent study credits, internship experiences, etc. to complete the required minimum 90 credits needed to complete the doctoral degree. Most doctoral students exceed the 90 credits required by the time that they graduate.

6 UW Graduate School: Doctoral Degree Requirements
Additional Requirements: A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00. Successful completion of the General Examination. Successful completion of the Final Examination (“dissertation defense”). A final copy of the dissertation prepared according to the GS specifications must be submitted to, examined by, and accepted by the Graduate School. Registration as a full- or part-time graduate student at the University for the quarter in which the examinations are completed AND the quarter the degree is conferred. Completion of all work for the doctoral degree within ten years.

9 Final Exam/Defense Ensure your Reading Committee Form has been set-up
Contact your faculty advisor regarding your readiness to schedule a Final Examination. Ensure that the Reading Committee has read an entire draft of your dissertation. Schedule a date, time, and location for the exam, making sure that all committee members can attend. Submit an online Request for Final Examination. Two weeks before the scheduled exam date is recommended. The Graduate School will determine if you have met the minimum requirements. The Office of Student Services will the Exam Warrant to your faculty advisor and you in time for the exam. Ph.D. students Schedule a doctoral final exam via MyGrad – Student View. Check your name and thesis details on record with the UW and the Graduate School: Go to MyGrad – Student View Select “Start Your Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD) process” Login in with your UW NetID and password Verify your name and thesis details entered in the UW ETD Administrator Site match this MyGrad record exactly. Review Required Sections for Your Document. Follow the guidelines and sample pages: title page copyright page abstract Obtain the necessary signatures on your Doctoral Dissertation Reading Committee Approval Form. Upload your dissertation to the UW Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD) Administrator Site Upload your Committee Approval Form to the Administrative documents section of the UW Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD) Administrator Site. Complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED)online.Note: Upon completing the SED, you will receive an SED notification from which includes your SED Certificate of Completion. Upload the SED Certificate of Completion to the Administrative documents section of the UW Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD) Administrator Site. SUBMIT your (1) dissertation, (2) Committee Approval Form, and (3) SED Certificate of Completion via the UW Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD) Administrator Site by the quarterly deadline. Confirm submission: after a successful submission, the message “Your dissertation/thesis has been submitted” will appear in the UW ETD Administrator site. Note: You will also receive an from “Administrator of University of Washington” that you have “submitted to the University of Washington.”

13 Online Dissertation submission
Don’t wait until the last minute to start this process. Upload your dissertation to the UW Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD) Administrator Site Upload your Reading Committee Approval Form to the Administrative documents section of the UW Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD) Administrator Site. (Just the Reading Committee members) Complete the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) online. Note: Upon completing the SED, you will receive an SED notification from which includes your SED Certificate of Completion. Upload the SED Certificate of Completion to the Administrative documents section of the UW Electronic Thesis/Dissertation (ETD) Administrator Site.

14 Graduate Registration Waiver Fee
Optional fee paid in lieu of summer registration Eligibility Students who completed all degree requirements but needed additional time to format their thesis or dissertation (project papers are not included) NOTE: International students must consult with an adviser in the International Student Services office to determine eligibility for the Graduate Registration Waiver Fee. Requirements –Dissertation Students Students must have been registered for the previous quarter. Students must have completed all Graduate School and graduate program degree requirements (courses, examinations, etc.); the only exception is the student was late submitting the thesis or dissertation. The theses/dissertations must be submitted in the UW ETD Administrator Site no later than 14 calendar days following the last day of the quarter in which all degree requirements were met.- June 28

15 Things to keep in mind Plan ahead, taking into consideration busy schedules Communicate with committee and advisors regularly Should request your final exam 3 weeks prior to the exam OSS can update exam date and time in emergency cases Warrants will be signed by entire committee member, submitted to OSS Final submission of your paper must be completed by 11:59 pm on June 14 Can participate in the ceremony, if you are not able to complete by June 14 Graduate Registration Waiver Fee must be requested by June 14, submission of final dissertation June 28
