5 Observation Observation: Using one or more of the 5 senses to gather information. It is a noticing and recording of FACTS. EXAMPLE: There is one TV in the room.

6 Inference Inference: Logical interpretation based upon your knowledge and experiences. Using your observation and what you know. EXAMPLE: Charlie keeps yawning and rubbing his eyes. You can infer that Charlie is tired. Read the following statement and make an inference. Michael is packing his bag for the weekend. He packs sun block, a hat, and towel. Where is Michael going?

11 Difference? Observations are what we see.
Inference is our guess based on what we can see. We see the boy is muddy but we don’t know why. We see there are 7 birds but we don’t know where they are flying to. We see the tiger’s fangs but we don’t know why he is showing them.

12 Think about this. How did that child get covered in mud
Think about this! How did that child get covered in mud? Where are those birds flying? What is the reason the tiger to show his teeth? The answers to these questions can be inferences. An inference is something that involves a decision being made about something you observe. For example, after looking at the muddy child, one could say he is dirty because he played outside when it was raining. The birds are flying south in the winter to avoid cold temperatures. A predator is threatening the lives of this tiger’s cubs. These are all inferences based on the observations made from the previous photos.
