2 Thomas Savery Savery became a military engineer, rising to the rank of Captain by 1702. He spent his free time performing experiments in mechanics. In 1696 he took out a patent for "rowing of ships with greater ease and expedicion than hitherto beene done by any other" which involved paddle-wheels driven by a capstan.

3 Thomas Savery This was dismissed by the Admiralty following a negative report by the Surveyor of the Navy, Edmund Dummer. Thomas Savery was once ejected from the Lord of the Admiralty's office as a lunatic. As he proposed a ship that could be propelled by side-mounted wheels rather than by wind or oars. He exhibited great fondness for mechanics, and for mathematicians, natural philosophy and gave much time to experimenting, to the contriving of various kinds of apparatus, and to invention.

4 The Natural Thermodynamic Cycle of this Universe.
Heat --> Vortex --> Motion --> Friction --> Heat Vortices therefore should be able to change heat energy into motive energy. This would necessitate an acceleration of flow and a cooling effect. Both of these can be observed in the case of vortices".

9 Timeline : History of steam engines
1698        Thomas Savery patent The Savery engine, with a 2 to 4 horsepower Savery engine costing from pounds. 1712        Thomas Newcomen patent 1736        Watt born 1755        Watt trained in London 1763        Watt discovers problem with Newcomen engine 1765        Watt discovers external condenser 1769        Roebuck and Watt patent the engine 1774        Boulton acquires Roebuck's patent rights        The first Boulton and Watt engine is commercially applied    Patent the double-acting engine 1800       Engine patent runs out. Watt retires at 64, healthy, happy, and famous 1819       James Watt dies, age 83

10 The Savery Mine Pump/Engine
Thomas Savery, July 2, 1698, patented the design of the first engine which had the most important advance in actual construction. A working model was submitted to the Royal Society of London.
