Chemical Reactions Lab
2
A. Synthesis (Combination)
A1: Magnesium combines with oxygen.
3
Mg + O2 → MgO
4
Magnesium (Mg)
6
Mg reaction with oxygen
7
B1: Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) decomposes.
B. Decomposition B1: Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) decomposes.
8
Hydrogen Peroxide
9
H2O2 → H2 + O2 This reaction occurs very slowly and so we use a catalyst to speed up the reaction. Catalysts are chemicals. MnO2 will be used as a catalyst in this reaction Catalysts are written above the arrow in a chemical equation.
10
MnO2 Catalyst
11
Test for O2 Insert a “glowing” splint. If it relights then O2 is present.
12
Hydrogen will explode when exposed to a flame
Test for H2 Hydrogen will explode when exposed to a flame
13
B2: Copper(II) Carbonate decomposes when heated.
B. Decomposition B2: Copper(II) Carbonate decomposes when heated.
14
CuCO3 → CuO + CO2
15
Copper(II) Carbonate
16
Copper(II) Oxide
18
Limewater Test for CO2 Lime water will turn cloudy when CO2 is bubbled through it.
19
Combustion B3: Methane is burned CH4 + O2 → CO2 + H2O
20
CH4 + O2 → CO2 + H2O
21
C. Single Replacement C1: Zinc is added to Hydrochloric acid (HCl)
22
Zn + HCl → H2 + ZnCl2
23
Zinc Hydrochloric Acid
24
Highly Exothermic
25
ZnCl2 is a clear solution however due to impurities in the zinc it may appear as a grayish solution with black specks.
26
Synthesis (Combination)
C2: Hydrogen and Oxygen Gas Combine Test for Hydrogen (Explosion)
27
H2 + O2 → H2O
28
C. Single Replacement C3: Aluminum metal is added to a solution of copper(II) chloride.
29
Al + CuCl2(aq) → Cu + AlCl3(aq)
30
Aluminum CuCl2(aq)
31
Al + CuCl2(aq) → Cu + AlCl3(aq)
32
D. Double Replacement D1: Solutions of sodium iodide and lead(II) nitrate are mixed.
33
Precipitate Formation
NaI(aq) + Pb(NO3)2(aq) → NaNO3(aq) + PbI2↓
35
PbI2 Precipitate
36
D. Double Replacement D2: Solutions of silver nitrate and sodium chromate are mixed.
37
Precipitate Formation
AgNO3(aq) + Na2CrO4(aq) → NaNO3(aq) + Ag2CrO4↓
