5 Undergraduate Degree Program Self-Audits (Spring 2019)
Several drivers behind Undergraduate Degree Program Self-Audits: R2 Roadmap “KSU colleges should set specific goals for their undergraduate programs that are built around their students, strategic partnerships, and institutional goals for undergraduate education, with specific definitions of success.” “Each unit should focus on moving students through their degree progression as efficiently as possible and into expected professions or graduate programs.”

6 Undergraduate Program Self-Audits (R2 Roadmap)
Strategies/metrics related to moving students through their degree progression efficiently: Percentage of students graduating who do not exceed required credit hours. Percentage of students meeting or exceeding RPG of comparators/aspirants. Percentage of students able to schedule courses within semester requested. Efficiency of curriculum to facilitate timely graduation.

7 Purpose of Undergraduate Degree Program Self-Audits
Average credit hour for degree completers per KSU student is 140. Address lack of alignment to BOR General Education Policy resulting in excess credit hours for students. Address lack of alignment to BOR Area F (Lower Division) requirements. Remove hidden pre-requisites adding credit hours. Reduce/Remove Bottlenecks (limited pathways when selecting course options). Re-calculate credit hours (miscalculations in some programs) and adjust.

8 Self-Audit Timeline/Steps
Spring 2019 Workshops held to explain the process for Self-Audits. Colleges submitted Self-Audits to Academic Affairs. AVP for Curriculum’s team reviewed programs, self-audits, and prepared feedback for each college. Summer 2019 AVP for Curriculum and Curriculum team visited colleges to share data, feedback and to discuss results.

9 Self-Audit Timeline/Steps
Fall 2019 Program revisions submitted in Curriculog for review. Fall 2020 Implementation of revised programs.

11 Introduction to KSU’s General Education Core Curriculum
Dr. Kris DuRocher Faculty Director of General Education phone: office: Kennesaw Hall Rm. 3440

12 Introduction to KSU’s General Education Core Curriculum
What is General Education? The foundation of skills, knowledge, and values that prepare students for success in their majors and in their personal and professional lives after graduation. General Education outcomes should be encountered throughout the undergraduate experience. What is the Core Curriculum? A part of general education, Core Curriculum Areas A-E. Where skills and ideas are introduced.

13 Where can I find information about General Education Core Curriculum?

14 The Current Core Curriculum at Kennesaw State University:
Area A: Essential Skills A1- Communication (6 credit hours) A2- Quantitative Reasoning (3 to 4 credit hours) Area B: Institutional Options B1- Contemporary Economic Issues (2 credit hours) B2- Cultural Perspectives (3 credit hours) Area C: Humanities, Fine Arts, and Ethics C1- Literature of the World (3 credit hours) C2- Arts and Culture of the World (3 credit hours) Area D: Science, Mathematics, & Technology D1- Applied Math (3 to 4 credit hours) D2- Science Process (7 to 8 credit hours) Area E: Social Sciences E1- U.S. Government (3 credit hours) E2- U.S. History (3 credit hours) E3- World History (3 credit hours) E4- Social Sciences (3 credit hours)

15 What Role does the University System of Georgia Board of Regents play in the core curriculum?
The USG dictates the structure of Areas A-E, including the following rules: All courses in Areas A–E must be taught at the collegiate level and be broadly focused. They must clearly address the general education learning outcomes of the institution. They must be consistent with the USG’s mission and strategic plan. Every institution must offer a path to completing all Area A–E requirements composed exclusively of 1000 and 2000 level courses. A requirement for all USG institutions to use common course prefixes, numbers, and descriptions for certain courses and programs. No course in Area A–E may be a pre-requisite for any course outside Areas A–E. Some programs. (Engineering majors, Science majors, can dictate specific math and science courses in the Core Curriculum.) The USG Handbook Section 2.4 in the General Education Core Curriculum can be found at this website:

16 How do programs make changes to the Core Curriculum?
Any change to a course in the Core Curriculum must go through the complete curriculum process at Kennesaw State University. Then depending on the type of change, it will be sent to the respective Academic Advisory Committee. All proposals must be submitted for consideration by the USG’s General Education Council. The USG GEC votes on proposals four times a year.
