10 What adjective would you use to describe Brian? Why?
What is an adjective? word used to describe a noun How did you annotations guide your choice of an adjective? How might your adjective change as the novel progresses? Brian will change because of his experiences. The plane crash was a major event and it will change Brian in many ways, big and small.

11 Brian-will change because of experiences
depressed cowardly brave prepared

13 N O T E S **All annotations that show Brian’s words, actions, or thoughts and are text based are valid!**

14 Possible Annotations:
T: Brian’s first thoughts after the pilot has a heart attack are to wish that it hadn’t happened because he just does not know what to do. A: Brian finally takes some action by checking on the pilot and trying to steer the plane. A: When Brian remembers the radio, he is nervous about using it because he has to get the headset from the pilot’s head, but he takes a deep breath and gets it done.

15 W O R D S Why did the author choose to use the word jerked?
Jerked is a strong word! After reading the sentence, I know it means pulled. Pulled doesn’t show me how desperate Brian is, but jerked does show me how upset and scared he is. The author’s word choice is important because it shows us how characters feel.

16 W O R D S What does depress mean? Why did the author choose to use the word depress? Think, then turn and talk. We can use context clues to determine what it means. Brian had seen the pilot depress the switch and then Brian pushed the switch in. Depress must mean to push something in. The author used this word because it sounds more technical. It show the switch is unfamiliar to Brian.

17 Story Vocabulary pulled 1. jerked= _________
2. depress= to _________ something in 3. consume= to ____ ____ or to take up entirely 4. initial= the _____ one 5. altitude= the _______ of anything above the surface 6. horizon= the _____ where the ______ meets the _____ push use up first height line earth sky

Synonyms finale, ________ Antonyms beginning, introduction 4. conflict= a __________ or __________ a character in a story must overcome 5. falling action= action that happens right ________ the climax of a story, where the tension ______________ dramatic intense last ending struggle problem after decreases

20 Plot Vocabulary (con’t)

21 P L O T ! Since plot has been so action packed and is so important in shaping Brian, we are going to pause and retell what has happened. Which events are important enough to influence Brian’s words, actions, and thoughts? Which events happened in the novel’s present time and which happened before Brian was in the plane? Are these events influential?

22 P L O T ! Work with your partner to list 5 main events that have happened so far in Hatchet.(Use your notes) 1. Brian begins to travel to Canada to visit his father. He is flying on a small plane with one pilot. 2. Brian gets lost in his thoughts, thinking about his parents divorce and The Secret he knows about his mother. 3. The pilot has a heart attack, leaving Brian alone on the plane. 4. Brian tries to fly the plane and is able to get the plane steady. 5. Brian tries to use the radio, but he loses the signal.

23 Let’s Express Our Understanding!

24 Good Example: Blue= Topic sentence, Green= Body (text evidence with explanation, Red= Concluding sentence Brian responds to the main events in the text in both positive and negative ways. For instance, when Brian can’t get the radio to work, he starts screaming and “slamming his hands against the wheel of the plane, causing it to jerk down, then back up.” Then he remembers how he had used a radio like this before and he recalls how you have to turn a switch to get the microphone to work. Once he calms down and remembers that, he is able to get the radio to work. This shows how Brian is reacting both positive and negative ways.

25 In this lesson, you learned more about Brian and how he reacts in the story.
You also practiced gathering evidence to track how a character develops in a literary text.
