1 LITERARY ELEMENTS Conflict and Plot

2 CONFLICT Conflict is the struggle between two opposing forces.
There are two types of conflict: 1. Internal 2. External

3 Internal conflict is when a character is in conflict with him/herself.
(Man vs. Self)

4 EXTERNAL CONFLICT External conflict is a struggle between a character and an outside force. Characters may face several outside forces: - Another character - Society - Nature

5 PLOT Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

6 Climax Rising Action Falling Action Exposition Resolution

7 1. EXPOSITION The exposition occurs at the beginning of a story. Here, the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

8 2. RISING ACTION This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

9 3. CLIMAX This is the turning point of the story. Usually, the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

10 4. FALLING ACTION All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

11 The story comes to an end!
5. RESOLUTION The story comes to an end!
