2 Exploration The act of searching or traveling to places for a purpose (resources, information, conquest, etc).

3 Spanish Colonial Era THE ERA when SPAIN held control over Texas by building COLONIES, MISSIONS, PRESIDIOS, ROADS, and RANCHOS.

4 El Camino Real Facts: (SPANISH word: THE MAIN ROAD)
Definition: This road connected all of Spain’s settlements in Texas for supplies and for protection from France and enemy Indian tribes.

5 Settlement A settlement is a colony or any small community of people.

7 Mission RELIGIOUS SETTLEMENT where Spaniards CHANGED the CULTURE and RELIGION OF NATIVE TEXANS that lived in them. They also made the native Texans work in order to make money for the kingdom of Spain

8 Presidio SPANISH MILITARY FORT with WEAPONS AND SOLDIERS to PROTECT the Spanish mission boarders from outside attack.

9 Conquistador A conqueror (a person who takes over another land), especially the Spanish conquerors of Mexico and Peru in the 16th century.

11 Colonization The action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area.

12 Expedition GOLD GOD GLORY
A journey or voyage taken by a group of people with a particular purpose For example: Exploration, Scientific research, or War. GOLD GOD GLORY

13 Viceroy A ruler (someone in a position of power) exercising authority (Being in charge of) in a colony on behalf of a sovereign (In place of a ruler such as a king or queen) Example: The Governor of Texas being in charge of Texas, so the president of the U.S. doesn’t have to deal with the States individual needs.
