1 Friday, March 24, 2017 Good Afternoon!
Please have a seat, and take out your notebooks and lab data!

2 J Analyzing Our Results Ionic or Covalent and WHY?
Appearance Melts? Dissolves in Water? Conducts Electricity? J Soft, white, solid Breaks easily Yes, quickly No Ionic or Covalent and WHY? If covalent – do you think it is Polar or Nonpolar? Why?

3 Polar vs. Nonpolar REMEMBER –
Nonpolar covalent compounds share electrons EVENLY, and molecules of covalent compounds will therefore break apart more easily. In Polar covalent compounds, one atom attracts the electrons more strongly than the others. Results in stronger bonding between molecules due to partial charges.

4 Potential Identities of your “Unknowns”
CaCl2 “Rock Salt” C12H22O11 “Sugar” NaC2H3O2 “Sodium Acetate” MgSO4 “Epsom Salts” Triglyceride Mixture (PRIMARILY contains C, H, O, N, and S) “Butter” Saturated Fatty Acids (PRIMARILY contains C, H, and O) “Coconut Oil” NaHCO3 “Baking Soda” NaCl “Salt” Propylene Glycol “Glycerin Soap” C15H31 “Wax”

5 Lab Report Workshop Read the example sections on your handout.
In the space below each section, write suggestions for how to improve each section. Work on this independently for the first ten minutes! Refer to your rubric or the checklist on the back of your handout if needed.

Share the comments/edits/additions you made with your partner(s). MAKE SURE EACH PERSON GETS A TURN TO SHARE. Compile your improvements!

7 For the Rest of Class… Get into your lab groups
