Méthodologie de l’expression écrite

What was the purpose of the 1832 Reform Act?
The purpose of this law was to lower the franchise, thus extending the voting population from 3 to 7% of the overall population. For the first time, the upper middle class had access to political life.

Why was it considered unsatisfactory?
Some categories of the population still did not have the vote (women, working class). Corruption remained: not all rotten boroughs had been eliminated, and ballots were still not secret.

Problème n°1 Réponse trop générale

« The purpose of this act was to introduce some wide-ranging changes to the electoral system, in England and Wales. This act was also put in place to reduce inequality in Parliament. It can be considered as unsatisfactory because it did not respect some measures put in place in this reform act. »

Problème n°2 Confusions et glissements

The purpose of the 1832 Reform Act was to balance the powers of British government. It gave more power to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet, and the powers of the Monarch were shared al little more with the Prime Minister.

The main goal of this reform was to let a wider population decide of their government. The chartists, for instance, wanted the right to vote for all men and secret ballots. After this 1832 reform, the Prime Minister is supposed to represent the will of the population.

Problème n°3 Hors sujet

The 1832 Reform Act was meant to help lower social classes get more power. The working class was not well included into the political life in the 19th century, and so only the aristocracy and the gentry were allowed to vote (but only men and landowners), and to give their opinions about political issues. One had to wait until Chartism to hit a little minds [sic] and until the 20th century to reach a kind of equal rights concerning voting legislation.

It was unsatisfactory because, as I said earlier, it took a long time before working class men could get involved into the political life of the country. There were a lot of petitions rejected before the (sic) equality was reached.

Réponse satisfaisante

« The purpose of the 1832 Reform Act was to make the population who could vote more diverse. Before 1832, the MPs only represented the interests of the aristocracy. Thanks to the Reform Act, the middle class was more represented in Parliament. In consequence, the population’s interests were a little more represented too.

Nevertheless, the working class still did not have any representatives in Parliament after the Reform. Moreover, corruption made on voters – the ballots were not secret yet – remained. Thus, the reform Act was judged unsatisfactory by a great part of the population. »
