2 Figure 1 Transit study showing retention of 3–20 markers taken on day 1 (normal is ≤3), 17 markers taken on day 2 (normal is ≤5), and 20 markers taken on day 3 (normal is ≤12). Transit was slow for 2 of the 3 sets of markers. The patient opened her bowels twice spontaneously during the transit study, on days 2 and 3. The timing of a single radiograph on day 5, which is 120 hours after the first set of markers was taken, allows optimal discrimination between normal and abnormal transit while limiting radiation exposure to a single radiograph (see Evans et al32 for more detail). If only 1 set of markers had been ingested on day 1 a result of normal transit would have been obtained. The markers taken on days 2 and 3 showed slow gut transit.
